Of all the 17 Remingtons that I've owned since the late 1970's, I've never owned one that shot best with a bullet jammed into or near the lands -factory or custom. A good jump always seems to work best for me and the 17 Rem....kinda' like what many 204 Ruger owners are finding out today.
My comment about cleaning was not directed at anyone in particular even though I referenced two folks for guessing and having a gut feeling. Most shot out small caliber barrels are dirty and fouled badly and not worn out.
As far as PD shooting goes...about 8 years ago I made a quick trip and only threw one rifle on a plane on short notice. I told myself I would pace my shots and keep the barrel from over heating. When I got home 5 days later I had toasted the throat of a new custom barrel in a 223 Rem of all calibers. With less than 1000 rounds. But I had a lot of fun doing it....
