Anyone use coyote decoys in the east?

I have tried several types of decoys from stuffed animal toys to a weasel ball stuffed in an old sock, sometimes they work.
At times, I still use an old trick that my grandfather taught me years ago. He always carried a white bandana while deer hunting, he would place the white cloth on a low limb out in the open, near a deer trail. Being as deer are quite curious they would come in to check out his "decoy". It worked several times, I know. Later I adapted his method to coyote hunting. Instead of a piece of cloth I use a small lightweight plastic garbage bag or food store bag. These bags can be had in brown or white and fold up to nothing for storage. I tie one end to a stick or branch, close to the ground, the slightest wind movement will make it flutter and shake. I found if the wind is a little too strong, add a few small rocks to the bag for ballast. An added plus, it also makes a good wind flag. If I'm using an e/caller I put the speaker near the decoy. Try it some time, it works.

Just another trick to fool ol' wiley....

Good hunting,

Go to Kay-Bee Toy and Hobby and get a "weasel ball". It's a ball with a motor in it with a tail on it that whips around on the ground. It's made for pets to play with I believe. I put contact cement on mine and then stuck cotton balls all over it. (unscrew the two halves so they don't get glued together) Then I put a screw-in eye hook on it and hang it from a branch or on a stake with a spring on it. I usually play the rabbit in distress call when I use it. I store it in a zip lock bag with bedding from a friend's rabbit cage. I've had good success with that. There are also all kinds of rabbit decoys, etc. that you can get from the different hunting supply catalogs. Some of them even have little motors in them to make them move. I didn't want to spend that much so I went with the weasel ball and made my own.
Necessity is the mother of invention.

Michael,
This spring my hunting partner gave me a weasel ball to try, the only thing I don't like about mine is the loud noise it produces. Does the cotton balls glued to the outside muffle the sound of the motor? I attached a thin string to the top of the ball so it could be hung from a tree branch. When I use it, I pull an old gray sock over the ball with the tail hanging out the bottom and the string going through the top (toe end of the sock). It looks good and makes a lot of movement but is still quite noisy. I have not used it enough to find out if the noise will scare off coyotes.

Good hunting

I've never had one shy away from the noise of the weasel ball that I recall but I've had a few kinda stop and cock their heads sorta like they were curious about it. I've never had one run away from one and the ones that spook probably do so before I see 'em anyway. The last coyote I shot actually was standing about 10 feet away from the weasel ball with his front feet up on a stump just kinda staring at it trying to figure it out. It actually gave me more time to set up for the shot. And I don't think the cotton I put on it really muffles the noise at all. I really like your sock idea, I think it would be easier to hang plus it would muffle the motor noise better than cotton I bet, too. Also the sock would hold the scent of the rabbit cage shavings I keep my weasel ball in. Thanks for the idea dude.

.........so that's what the bag was for......I thought it was for.....er.....well, nevermind. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I can't believe I'm sharing this, but...my business partner and I went out one day a while back and he had this brainstorm of taking a section of several different types of fur from our scrap barrels one day, tanning them and sewing them to a varmint sized stuffed animal for a decoy.
You had to see this thing to believe it. Wait, second thought you still wouldn't believe it. That thing looked like over grown Calico Cat with mange that just fought it's way out of a barb wire fence.
Needless to say, it didn't work and I felt like an idiot calling over it. beside the fact that i couldn't stop laughing.

.....I ended up shooting the damn thing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I bought the decoy called "critter"

You stick it in the ground and turn it on. It flops around like a wounded animal while you call. I can also take the "critter" off and put a crow decoy on it to make the "wounded crow" decoy. Bought it for $50.00 One guy shot 45 coyotes and even had a black bear come to it in one year hunting EASTERN COYOTES!!!!!

The box was thrown out and I kick myself for doing it!!!!!

www.decoyheart.com And thats what powers the critter.

and then decoy its self was just a furry "critter" that fitted over the decoyheart.

if you call the local hunting stores and ask for a predator decoy that uses a decoy heart or something of such you might find it. I'm sorry that I can't help you out anymore then I can.

best of luck finding it,

I just noticed this! If you look between the guys and see a fury thing thats the decoy itsself!!!!!!!!!!
It looks ALOT better with a closure view and yes it has fur on the tail even though it doesn't look like it.

Hey Michael Mickelson,
I have one of these "critters" too (or it looks just like it) I got mine at Cabelas. Just look under Miscellaneous decoys. It's called "Predator supreme decoy"

You can see the Predator Supreme decoy in use in the video by Primos calls" the Truth about hunting coyotes".It's creator puts on a fairly good show as well. BIL ordered one and likes it.If it had a stake that broke down I would like it better than the Enticer I have. Both systems pretty well fit in your pocket or hunting jacket.Neither weighs in at more than 1 and 1/2 pounds.

I've tried many diferent decoys over the years. All work for the purpose.I've used cotton balls feathers , deer tails , even accidently used myself once.Calf killer made a bad mistake.I saw them first and laid down in the pasture wearing brown coveralls.I got the female of the group but they scared me so bad I missed four shots at a straight away running target.Looking back on it is funnier than you can imagine.

Thats what it is.....couldn't figure out what it was called.
Now you can also put a crow on it and hunt crows with it. It flops around like a wounded crow.

Jimmie,
Actually that Predator Supreme is pretty easy to adapt to a two piece turkey decoy stake. That's how I have mine set-up and it works great. It's also adjustable for height set up that way.
