Anyone using coyote decoys

a WHAT?! LOL!!

Shoulder bag, or Man Purse. At least it is camo. I went with a fag bag because I can walk in, pull out caller etc, walk back to my spot and sit without pulling off a backpack. The strap also unsnaps so I can untether it without wrestling over a heavy winter coat. It has proven to be very useful.

I cut out a silhouette of a coyote from a piece of 1/2 inch plywood then covered it with a coyote pelt. I first coated the flesh side of the pelt with 20 Mule Team borax to preserve the pelt. I stapled some pipe insulation foam along the back and head area of the silhouette to widen and protect the pelt. The pelt had to dry for a day or so and then was cut down the center of the lower jaw through the belly, after which I stapled it to the silhouette. Years ago, I talked to several callers that were using decoys and they said the sitting decoy worked better for them and the oncoming coyotes usually approached the decoy from it's back side.

You can fasten some metal angle brackets along the bottom edge and use some small stakes to hold the decoy upright. The preserved fur will last several seasons.

Very nice! Great idea and very creative. Had me fooled before I read your post! Where do you get the tanned pelts from? Thanks!!

I have a Flambeau Lone Howler, but have only used it a couple of times. I've just finished up bowhunting for deer and will be going back out after coyotes.

I'm going to start out with my MOJO Critter and depending on how the calling goes, I may set up the Lone Howler with it.

It's a little difficult to carry in, but I found a large mesh decoy bag that carries it well, but without the tail attached. After I get where I'm going then I install the tail and move into a calling position.

The full body coyote decoys sure were the hipe a couple of seasons ago. A bunch of companies came out with them, a bunch of people bought them, but never heard much about them last season or this season yet. Same goes with the whole "estrus chirp" hipe from a couple seasons ago. I'm interested if it was just a fad or if people are still using them.

I still use the chirp, especially this time of year, but all I ever call with it are the big, old, single males with the worn teeth. My two heaviest-41 & 42#- came in to the chirp.

I made the following coyote decoy from a pelt (fleshed and wet - not dried) that I bought from a local fur buyer.

we found a dead buck frozen on the ground, all 4 legs straight out one year. so we took and put it out in one of our hayfields about 150yds back from the road and proped it up with a couple of sticks. over the next few days there were a lot of pot shots taken at it. i think it had a half dozen holes in it by the time it was all said and done lol

I bought one about two years ago but was too embarrassed to ever deploy it in the field (cause you know somebody might be watching me with bino's lol) so it resided in my garden until the elements finally deteriorated it.

Seems like a good idea, and simple enough to try and see how it goes..

Get some Coyote urine and spray a little on the decoy from time to time, and you may have a very convincing decoy.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing how it works out.

I had a coyote hide mounted on a taxidermy form for my decoy, works okay but definitely not needed, one packs too much stuff coyote hunting lol, my cousin posing like he's feeding it. I named her "lil [beeep]".
