Aoudad Sheep Hunting

My buddy and I have got a Aoudad Sheep hunt booked in West Texas for Jan.2003,yea I know it's stil a year away but I'm trying to find out all I can about these critters.
These are "Free Ranging","totally wild" and this is not a High Fence canned hunt.
Has anyone hunted these sheep?If so I would like to hear about your hunt ect.By the way we'll be hunting in the Ft.Davis area.Thanks possum
 
Yep, The area I was in was craggy mountainous. I got up high and glassed. They didn't seem to overly weary. Not a "tough" hunt. I wasn't taken in by it at all. Never desired to do it again. And the meat wasn't all that great either.I was also hunting wild animals and on Public Land. Hope you have a great hunt.

Thanks for the info,If I could I'd like to ask you a couple questions.What would you consider to be the average range of shot oppertunitys,what caliber rifle did you use and Did you see lots to choose from? Hope I'm not be too nosey,just trying to gather info.Thanks possum
 
Sheep season starts today the 15th and if it wasn't for a Wildlife Society meeting and a quiz tomorrow I'd be chasing them right now.Oh well I'll just have to wait till Friday. Sheep are a blast to hunt. Poor man's Bighorn is what we call them. We mainly hunt them on public land in Southern NM and my bunch has taken some really good rams(for public land) despite all the attempts of the game and fish to knock the herd down( I know that exotics can be devestating to resident wildlife but dangit they are so much fun). I hear the Davis mountains are a sheep hunters paradise so I'd set my goals above the thirty inch mark. A big ram is a tough critter and although I'm not recommending it I've seen more rams lost to magnums while others shot with 243s 270s 25-06s fall right over(must be shot placement hint hint)So I would recommend any deer rifle that you shoot accurately ,of course I'm not your outfitter, so take it or leave it. But at any rate you should have fun and challenging hunt and I'll be jealous!

Hey thanks for the info.I'm going to take my 7mmRM.I'm presently shooting 160gr.Nosler PTs with good accuracy and I have confidence in this out to 300 then things start getting tricky for me.
What are the average ranges one can expect to get shots at? Let me know how you do this year and Good Luck!!! possum

You've got PLENTY of gun. You won't have to shoot 300 yards.I was in the same area Pistolero is talkin about. Get yourself on the High ground and Glass everything. When you find what your looking for put thesneek on it. And shoot when your comfortable. Have a good hunt and make sure you let us know how it turns out. TAKE PICTURES.

I'll take lots of pics,but it's not till Jan27-31 of 2003.Yep still over a year away and I'm already chomping at the bit.I can hardly wait this will be an adventure for me as I've never been in that part of the world or that type of terrain before. possum
