Apex predators

I.O.N.Doyle,

Rim Runner, Dont you just hate feedin time? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gifIf it gets any worse I'll have to think of a way to dissapear from the earth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I think the true Apex Predator is the Human Female. Man sits atop the food chain in the world and she sits above man. She is wiley and actually induces her prey to hunt her. Only after determining that the prey is suitable will she strike and when she does she takes her time making the prey as useful as possible. Sometimes milking the prey for a lifetime! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If you are talking true predation you have to leave the human element out of it..

That is because killing the other predator is not neccassarily utilizing it for food.. Sometimes it is just for the killing. Such as for a trophy.

In that context great white sharks, eagles, lions, tigers, and the grey wolf come to my mind.. I am sure that there are others..

How many are Keystone predators though?.. James L.

Alright, now you're on the right track. Apex predators are those who are dependent upon predation, but are not preyed on by other predators. Think "adult" stage, since many juvenile Apex's are in the food chain. Man is not included in the equation. His survival is not dependent upon predation.

I named great whites but most large sharks are apex predators. Another that comes to mind are tiger sharks.

As well as hammerheads..

While these guys may be preyed upon from time to time they pretty much have no real time natural enemies once they reach full blown adult stage.. And the longer they live the bigger they get!!!!!..

In other words they have no predator that actively stalks them..

Mountain lions????

Timber Rattlers...

cobras, mambas, etc. pretty much all of the large truly seriously poisonous snakes (talking about the ones that bite and you die within seconds to minutes.)as well as the real large constrictors.

There may be more to this list as far as species goes but one has to set parameters and I don't really know what the parameters are for being a true APEX predator.

I will have to admit that I looked the word up before I answered.. I laughed when I saw what it said and told myself I knew that. I just couldn't access my RAM due to intercranial interference at that moment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif..... James L.

kamoto dragon. can kill all poisonous snakes & all other animales.
If it were not for weapons, man would not have a chance against many the the animales we kill. I for one would not want to tangle with; deer, coyote, racoon & even an angry mother goose could give us quite a good beating if not for the( tools of our trade) guns, bows and not too long ago rocks and sticks. All things being equal we are not the apex predator.

The problem is that all things are not equal. Not counting man there are several predators that have been listed here that would be considered on the apex of the food chain in their enviroment but they are limited to that enviroment. A man may not be able to take on a shark and a man may not be able to beat a big bear but mankind can. The Great White, Komodo Dragon, Kodiak Brown can all dominate their habitat but none of them are capable of moving to each others and taking it over. We can move, adapt, and create in any location on the planet and as soon as we do we become the sole apex of the chain. On top of that we also can choose, at our will, to not to prey on any given species.

Because of the strict scientific definition we do have to exclude humans for all of Doyle's reasons. Apex predators are the king of their habitat/biome/environment.Because man can adapt to his surroundings with his tools (merchanical as well as menta) in any of the earths' environment, and for that fact even the moons environment he is king. Lions in their area, white sharks in theirs and the list goes on are at the top of the heap in their own back yard. Even put a Betta fish in an aquarium full of guppies and the king will emerge.
