Apple scent

DON'T use it the way a friend of mine used it several years ago. He put it on his clothes and spent the day dealing with yellow jackets and bees. It's an attractant, not cover, scent so put it out in front of you 15-20 yds. I'd only use it if it's a natural scent in the area you hunt in.

Are there any apple trees nearby? I try to use scents that are commonly found in the area I'm hunting so they don't seem "foreign" to the game I'm pursuing. My 2 cents

I wouldn't use it in most cases. Any type of foreign odor in the woods would be an alert to deer. That would include apple scent in the hardwood forests or spruce lowland of MN, especially when and if mixed with human scent.

This is different than setting up a bait pile, where legal. If in tight cover bow hunting it may have some limited use. I'd give more attention to watching and playing the wind, then reasonable scent control. It's impossible to totally eliminate the scent one gives off.

I shot a nice buck last Nov in MI. To a deer I'm sure I stunk to high heavens. The light breezes were from the NW while I moved generally West, NW through hilly terrain. I posted up on a medium sized knob toward mid afternoon, watching thick cover to the NW. Along came the nice 8 ptr, easy shot with the 284 Winchester.

I believe some hunting products are designed and marketed to catch more hunters/buyers than actual game in the field...

As an aside, I hunted with a guy years ago, 30+, he actually brought some apples in the woods, set them on a log to watch, then took them home after the hunt. It wasn't an established bait pile, just apples on a log like he was feeding his horse, a one time deal. Needless to say, he didn't see a deer much less bag one.

Definitely true. I try to stay as scent free as possible, most of the time. I don't go crazy with scents or use bait. I may use a lil Code Blue or Tinks 69 during the rut, but that's about it........
