AR 15 BM Varminter accuracy?

Then they must not test fire them all. One had brass markings on the deflector the other did not. So much play between the upper and lower on the one that you could look through it. I know they are all not like that. I found another one today that was as tight as could be, and no accu wedge in it either.

Lots of tests have been done and though play between the upper and lower may annoy you, it is no deterrent to accuracy. Easily fixed if you don't like it.

I'm having my guy check on prices and availability for both BM Varminters, the BM Predator, the RRA Varmint, and the DPMS 204 Ruger. I've convinced myself that I need one very soon. "Need" really isn't true, but I'm not waiting 6 weeks. Besides I'll probably end up owning a few of these before it's all said and done.

i have noticed that no one mentions panther arms hardly at all,is there a problem with them or is bushmaster and armalite that much better?,,i have a question on rifling,is the lower twist,s better for heavier bullets, like 1-8 twist for heavy and then 1-12 better for lighter bullets? or is there middle twist's like 1-10 twist will shoot all weight bullets? and i see you can get an AR in 204 ruger,,would this be a good gun to get or would the 223 be better,,its all to shoot coyotes, groundhogs and paper?
Thank you

ohiobob,
Yes a lower number (1:8) is better for heavier/longer bullets, but it's actually considered a faster twist rate since it will twist a complete turn in only 8" where as a 1:12 would take 12" for just one turn. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that 1:8 would be considered higher (or faster). As far as optimum: 1:9 is what Bushmaster chose because it is great for most bullets. But they have now come out with a 1:8 twist in their Predator rifle because of demand for the heavier bullets for coyotes and such.

I too wanted a 204, but I'm afraid that I might lose some accuracy. I have nothing to prove this theory. I just don't think many have hit the hands of shooters yet, so we really don't have a whole lot of data to go off of. I decided to get a proven round in a proven gun (223 in Bushmaster or Rock River Arms). I'll get a 204 at a later date I'm sure. I'll be watching these forums to see what type of accuracy people are getting out of their DPMSes and Les Baers. I'm rather new to this AR stuff, but this is what I've found. Hope this helps.

Looks like I'm going with the Bushmaster. The Rock River was a little cheaper, but it would take 3-6 wks. I'm in too big of a hurry to wait. My choice I'm going to have to make is between the Varmint Special or the Varminter.

Take another look at RRA.
I have a couple of them with the Elevated Optical Platform and love it! Right off the bat it will save you at least $50 in a raised base for the scope and the scope still won't be high enough. They come in 3 lengths of Wilson barrels I got all of mine in 24".
Not to mention I like the National Match trigger the Rock River has more than the Bushy trigger (I have both)
Nothing wrong with the Bushy gun I just like the RRA better.

Genesis,
I'm very much back and forth so much that now you've got me leaning towards RRA. I'll be using a Leupold 50mm target scope. Am I going to need the EOP? I thought that it would be too high. Maybe for something like a red dot scope. But will I need it for a "normal" scope?

Does it still take forever to get an AR from Rock River? I ordered one from them about a year ago and after waiting 10 weeks with still no guarantee from them when it would be built, I purchased a Bushmaster Varminter and had it in less than a week! I have no regrets either, I really like my Varminter! It is a very accurate gun!

Ordered a Varminter last Monday...Got it on Wednesday...I think the Varminter is the only one you'll get in a hurry...The Predator is 6-8 weeks out from what I hear..

I ordered two Varmint Specials with Stainless Steel barrels yesterday. One for my step dad. (he caught the AR bug as well). They'll be here today or tomorrow. The Rock Rivers would have been a little cheaper, but 3-6 wk delivery is what I was told. I plan on killing a whole lot of coyotes in between now and then. Thanks for all of the help guys. I'll let you know how they shoot.

hey husker 98,was you the one that one the BIG LOTTERY ,,powerball i think,,husker 98 OLE' BUDDY OLE' PAL!
ive had handguns delivered next day because the airlines,,and UPS companys dont like them in their system due to the employees stealing them,,,but do they have the same policy for rifles too?,,i wonder if its a ploy by the airlines or UPS to charge the extra money for next day delivery? but let us know how they shoot

LOL! Unfortunately, I didn't win the lottery. If I had I wouldn't be worried about which gun to buy. I'd just buy them all:) Not sure about the gun shipping thing. My FFL guy just seems to get everything very fast. Maybe that's why. I'll let you know how they shoot.

The EOP is will help with the 50mm scope you are using to clear the top of the gun ,and if you use a cheek pad like I do it will be perfect.
My partner ordered his RRA from Legal-Transfers and it took 6 weeks to get it.
I have one for sale if you dont want to wait.
Again, there is nothing wrong with the Varminter...I just prefer the RRA. When I go out shooting prairie dogs in the morning the 24" RRA is the one that does the trick for me.

A couple months back I stopped at the gunshop. They were reordering some handguns. It was a holiday weekend and the guns were locked in the Fed Ex building, but disappeared.

Byron,
Just a bump up to the top to make sure you leave a review when you have had time to test the "Predator". I went in yesterday and ordered one for myself so in 6-8 weeks I'll have a write up of my own I suspect. This will be my first AR but I believe I will be very pleased with it as it is about the only gun on the market I have found that really is setup for what I want in a calling rifle. Now I just have to upgrade my health insurance to cover that whole "Black Rifle Disease" everyone talks about. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I love my Varminter! I have killed alot of prairie dogs with it. I agree that the 24" barrel can get to be a little too much when hunting coyotes. My 10yr old has laid claim to my Varminter and now I'm looking at the Predator. Somebody please post pics and a range report when you get one. Thanks.

Other than the twist rate, does the Preditor have the same barrel as the Varminter?
What the heck is a "hybrid SAAMI Spec. chamber"?
Anyone know how much the Preditor weighs?
----------------

Well I just called Bushmaster and got the answers.

* The Preditor barrel is in fact just a 20" version of the Varminter barrel.

* The "hybrid SAAMI Spec. chamber" is SAMMI sepc EXCEPT it has a longer lead to handle the longer heavier "Preditor Weight" bullets.

* While the weight of the Varminter is aprox 8.75 Lbs, the weight of the Preditor should come in just a hair over 8 Lbs.

I got to hold one of the Varminters at the local gun shop this afternoon and really liked it. It was a little long, but still balanced well, but I didn't think it was too heavy. I really liked the BM competition trigger. It felt like is was set perfectly with a 3 1/2 Lb take-up & 1 Lb let-off.

After reading this thread, handling the Varminter, and talking to Bushmaster, I think the Preditor is going to be much more to my likeing with the shorter barrel and being a little lighter as well.

I've definitely got to get me one of these! Come on tax return!!!!!

if they are making AR's in a few different calibers like 204 and 25wssm,why cant they make one in 22-250?
Ohiobob

well--this is like asking why can't you fit a square peg through a round hole. The reason they can chamber the 204 and 25wssm(which i havn't seen--but i will take your word fot it)in an AR15 is because its based on a 223 rem lenth case or shorter and the 22-250 wouldn't fit in the mag. Now you can chamber a 22-250 in an AR10 which is chambered for the .308 win. they already have some ar10s chambered for 243 and 260 rem(which i have heard amazing things about). I hope this helps

I couldn't wait for the predator so I purchased the varminter a couple of days ago. I sighted it in with federal v-shok 55 grain nosler b.t. and it really liked them. I tried some 68 grain hp Black hills but they didn't perform as well. Today we went after some whistle pigs and the varminter was impressive and the nosler bt were impressive as well. I will be making up some reloads with the noslers. The v-shok are great just exspensive to shoot.
