Ar 15 or Bolt gun

http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/weapons/pcwvms20fpred8.asp

Here you go hammer.

I bought a 22-250 first, gonna keep it. I have caught the EBR (evil black rifle) disease, and I'm in the process of building my first AR, instead of buying one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, being very proficient at tearing things apart and somehow making extra parts magically appear after reassembly......... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I went through the same scenario about 3 months ago. I actually bought the Savage, but in a 25-06 cal. Love the gun, and it's an addition of many to my bolt action guns. Shoots flat and straight and very accurate, would not trade it for anything, but.........

Then I checked out the Bushmaster Varminter, which changed everything. Hunting with this "Black Gun" is the ticket. Lot's of fun, cheap ammo, and no recoil, and did I say huge amounts of fun.

If you only have a choice of one, buy the "Black Gun".

It's going to be a duel purpose coyote prairie dog gun(I don't have enough money to have a seperate gun for each).

bullpup44,
I had to make a simular decision and went with a Rock River Arms A4 and have absolutely no regrets. There are so many options for an AR vs. a bolt rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

My situation was that I had a custom bolt rifle, but had to sell it to afford an AR. I asked some of the guys on this board for their opinion and the majority of replies were, "have you ever heard of some one say that they wished they had their bolt rifle back....after purchasing an AR?".

I sold it, purchased the RRA A4 and love it. I wished that I'd purchased an AR years ago. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Good luck with your choices!
Good hunting, Bowhunter57

Thanks for the link. I think I will stick with the varminter. I am not a big walker for predators but those boyz will love that gun.

If money isn't a big issue- get a Bushy Predator; Just my 2 cents.

I feel retarded on figuring out these ar's but really need one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

What is the predator?

Thanks

Hammer

look at Bushy's web site. Its is the varminter with a 20 inch barrel instead of a 24 inch barrel.

why is it that everyone seems devoted to bushy? or RRA, or DPMS? you can buy the same gun, very likely made by the same folks from someone else cheaper. look at model 1 sales, M&A parts, or J&T distributing. they all buy parts from the same vendors and just assemble them at they're shop.
There is only one company that can claim to be a true manufacturer, thats OLY. every body else just buys parts from vendors where ever they can get them cheapest and assemble them in house. Some use different barrels, thats where buying power and connections come in.
RRA uses wilson barrels, J&T uses shaw, M&A uses shaw and harris. AR's unless you go custom are about all the same, that 1100 dollar bushy can be bought somewhere else for about 800 bucks or so.

I am a bolt action guy & I currently own several from 22-250
to 25-06AI & on up to 300 mag. But I no longer own a 223 bolt gun after owning several. Last year, I bought a RRA Varmiter & that was it for bolt action 223's & I don't think that will ever change.

Get the AR-15! I have a number of small bore rifles, that
occasionally get hunted. I usually do a bunch of load
development for these bolt guns, and then catlog the loads,
and put them on the rack, or in the safe. Really nice dust collectors! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I have two AR-15's, one RRA Varminter, and one Armalite NM
lower, with a pre-ban M4 upper. Even the varminter rides
the pine alot. When I grab a rifle to dispatch a varmint,
or to hunt predators, I grab the stubby AR-15. It shoots
very small groups, carries like a feather, and points like
my finger. And the BANG, BANG, BANG... feature is nice too.

Last week I was doing some load development, for some bolt
guns, and I found a couple of loads that put 3 shot groups,
for three different rifles, into .3 to .4 MOA groups. While
I was cooling between groups, I checked the zero on my
Stubby AR-15. I had missed a squirrel the other day,
three times, and suspected the scope might have been
jarred. It was, and there was a .3 MOA group, about 1"
low, and 1.5" left of the aim point. This is a 16"
pre-ban(light barrel) upper! I adjusted the scope,
and put a .4 MOA group on the point of aim. I looked
over at the line of bolt guns, cooling their barrels,
and said, "Boys, you need to work harder, this automagic
rifle is kickin' your butt!". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks guys again for all of the information and opinions. One of my main concerns was accuracy and reliability of the AR15, but it seems like I really don't have to worry about that. Now I just have decide. It seems there are some great arguments for both. I just have to weigh those and see which would be better for me. Thanks again fella's for all of your help.
