AR-15 - which is best?

I'm an old handgun shooter who is considering an AR-15. Of course, Colt is a name I recognize, but Bushmaster and Armalite I've never heard of before. Are there others who make the AR-15, who makes the best one, and which of the companies is expected to still be around in ten years?

Bushmaster
Armalite
DPMS
Rock River Arms
Olympic Arms

Those are your main players and quality is not listed in order, they are all very good products. Keep in mind most of these companies do not make anything, except Olympic Arms. They are assembled products, with these companies names on them. Oly Arms makes many of their own parts including barrels. Their SUM (stainless ultra match) barrels, by the way, are very accurate.

Other places to look at for ideas is

JP Enterprises
Fulton Armory
Model 1 Sales
JN Rifle works
Eagle Arms, subsiderary of Armalite
Our own Mike Milli, aka Dtech, here on the PM's

Personally, I don't think there is just one best. First thing you need to do is maybe figure out what 'type' of AR you want, and then look at what the manufacturer offers. Decide on barrel length, bull barrel vs normal, free float barrel or not, collapsible stock or not, flat top or iron sights, ect ect and then decide the manufacturer. Of course, I don't know anyone personally who only owns 1 AR, so don't think you need to knock yourself out figuring out what you like. Do what I did, buy 4 of 'em.

16" M4 clone or 24" Varminter, I would go with a Rock River.

The Bushmaster V Match is a nice calling rifle, and it was my 1st AR.

Armalite, Bushmaster, DPMS, Rock River....I have seen, owned, and shot them, and they are all fine.

There are others that are are rumored to have very good quality, but I don't have firsthand knowledge so I will pass on commenting.

other than oly, they are basicly the same figure out who's barrel ya like, RRA uses wilson, model 1 uses shaw and harris, J&T uses shaw, even average AR's shoot well.
