AR-15????

WICOYOTE

OK all you AR guru's I want to but an AR so what am I looking for? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif I'm gonna plink, target shoot, coyote hunt, and possibly some day go PD'n. I want to buy once and would like your opinion on the best set up. I'm selling a bunch of hunting/fishing stuff and saving up to buy something good.

You can save some money by building your own, but for simple ease, just get a common name rifle...DPMS, Rock River or Bushmaster. Get a 20" flat top with the free floating handguard/barrel, and you should be good to go.

Wicoyote, The bushmaster varminters are good for a complete rifle. My brother and two huntin buddies have these and they are good shooters. Descent weight around 10lbs. I built my own with a Rock River Arms national match trigger lower and a DPMS 16" SS fluted bull barrel 1:9 twist great accuracy and around 9.7 to 10lbs as well. Alot of the guys here like the 1:8 twist. I have around $850 in mine and you can buy a used varminter for around the same. I like the longer barrels for PD'n and shorter barrels for swinging at coyotes. I also have a RRA national match trigger 24" SS bull barrel that I use PD'n ,13.5lbs. I like the weight when shooting PD's as you can see the bullet hit in the scope better than my shorty. If I had only one I'd go with my shorty. I agree with nefj40's sugestions but would add a good trigger as well. Get a jewel or national match trigger. My 2 cents. Have fun and enjoy. My AR'S are my favorite guns and wouldn't trade any of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'm with nefj40 here. Buy any that he mentioned and you can't really go wrong. I have two Bushmasters so I am a little partial to them. For an all round gun I would do just like he said, 20 inch barrel, flat top(for scoping) and free floating handguard. Also up grade the tigger to a nice two stage. The Varmiter I have has a 24 inch barrel and seems a little long a first but I love it now. It has everything that you are looking for and can be had for about $950 ready to shoot out of the box.

Bushmaster Varminter or Bushmaster V-Match would fill the bill nicely!

All of you AR15 owners who think this will be the only AR 15 WICOYOTE buys, raise your hands now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It ain't going to happen. Remember the old commercial about Lays potato chips? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I dont have one yet, as they are still restricted up here in canada. But, from reading this board for the last few years, it seems everyone is very pleased with the AR's from our very own Dtech. I'd suggest you get in touch with him.

I would agree with a sporter weight for hunting yotes and plinking for most folks but for target and PD' use you need a 24" heavy .930 barrel. I use the heavy barrels for it all! I like the 20" barrel for general hunting but the 24 for PD or long range. Make sure you get it fluted! Big difference!

Also, get a 1 in 8 twist barrel as it will shoot the most variety of factory loads with good accuracy than the 1 in 9's. They seem to be picky on the factory stuff.

I would not waste extra money on any of the factory 2-stage match triggers they offer. Not worth it! Spend the small about of extra money and get a single stage JP trigger. This is more like the one you are use to in std rifles. McCormick is a decent trigger if you can get one but cost more than a JP.

Finally, I would recommend DPMS as you can get fluted heavy barrels, 1 in 8 twists, and JP triggers set up from them at the factory. Any of the rest should be decent rifles. I just like the DPMS cause they offer the most options from the factory.

ok, here's the scoop, all the AR companies except OLY, buy parts and assemble them, you can buy a great shootin AR from about anyone, Jesse at J&T Distributing will make you any configuration you would like.
The main difference is who's barrels they are using, J&T uses Shaw barrels, RRA uses wilson, model 1 uses shaw and Harris. just do your research, decide who's barrel ya like and go with it.
Ya want an OLY SUM (stainless ultra match) contact dtech he builds great uppers. but realisticly about any of the makers put out nice shooting rifles, and I do like a 1-8 twist.

I'll have to agree with the above posts, as far as a name brand AR. You can't go wrong with Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, Armalite, D.P.M.S. or D.S.A. They're all good and it will come down to options that YOU want and cost differences.

Rock River Arms gave me the options and price that I was looking for, along with the reputation of usage by the D.E.A., U.S. Marshalls, F.B.I. and Force Recon Marines. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Simularly, Bushmaster is used by U.S. Navy Seals. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I purchased a RRA A4 Varmint from Adco Firearms at an "out the door" price of $830. The one that I own is a Tactical Entry model with a 16" SS Wilson Varmint 1:8 twist barrel. Other options included a National Match trigger, Hogue combat grip (green), collapsable stock (green), flat-top upper, free-float tube and CAR Tactial sights.

Good luck with your choices!

My advice - Take it or leave it - no prob either way

Buy a complete assembled lower from a local gun dealer, the lower receiver is the only registered part. You'll have to do the paperwork on the lower one way or the other so you might as well do it with the local folks. The complete lower will get you the receiver, stock, and parts for the trigger and hammer.

Then shop the net for the upper you want, this can be shipped directly to your door. Make sure you get a complete upper with bolt and bolt carrier. The upper and lower go together with two pins, it's real easy.

Now you'll have something to shoot, you can then decide if you want to upgrade to a better trigger.

I did this for about $650 minus a scope, you pay an 11% tax on a fully assembled rifle, so you will save a bit by buying the upper and lower separately.

Here's mine: DPMS lower w/ RRA 2 stage trigger, Model 1 Sales varmint upper w/ 16" bull barrel, Weaver Classic 6 scope.

Thanks again for the info you AR GURU'S /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I will take this all to heart and hopefuly post pics of the new member of the cabinet

I'm not a real serious shooter and don't keep my targets. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I can hold every shot in 2" easy at 100 yds, I've used both Win. White Box 45 gr and Federal Gold Match 69 gr. I get them in 1" probably half the time. The rifle shoots better I can. Minute of coyote out 100-150 yards is all I'm looking for.

I would suggest building it. I just built my first one this last week. The upper is a A4 20" SS HBAR that I bought used. Then I got a Superior arms blemished stripped lower reciever(could not even tell where the blem was) for 75 shipped. I splurged and got a RRA LPK with the 2 stage trigger. Found an ACE ARFX stock on ebay with buffer, buffer tube and spring for 70 bucks. All in all I have right at 450 invested in it with out sights. I guess what I am saying is don't get in any hurry and check the for sale forums (especially AR15.com) and you can build exacly what you want for cheap. I wanted to build my lowere myself so I can say I did that its a little more sense of accomplishment.

Good luck with your choice

You should be able to put a complete lower together for around $175. They sell RRA stripped lowers at my local gunshow for $99 and the parts kit is $75. Then all ya gotta do is pick out your upper which can be around $400 and up.

My model 1 20" bull would shoot 1" groups easlily, it's a heavy upper and doesn't make for a good carry gun. The 16" RRA that I put togther for my dad is very nice and carries great but is 10x louder than the 20" version.

Where do you get a lower parts set, A2 butt-stock, buffer-tube, buffer and operating spring for $75.00?
