AR 204 barrel length

A friend wants to build a 204 Ruger upper and wants short barrel .

Does it loose its sparkle with the shorter bbls

Depends how much sparkle you like. 22" would be my sparkle minimum. Little bullets with lots of speed are my addiction.

I read somewhere, a while back ago 23" is the magical length for .204 Ruger so I built one and I am happy with it.

How much sparkle does an 18 inch loose? What length of gas system does an 18 use?

30-40 FPS per inch. I believe in mid for an 18". I also believe in adjustable gas blocks for more options.

My 18" still has plenty of sparkle and pushes a factory Hornady 40gr Vmax 3800fps and being shorter has great maneuverability. And I went mid length gas and adjustable gas block.

You haven't chronoed that ammo yet have you?? I am just saying that those fps seems quite high for 40gr bullets and a 18 inch barrel.. Dan

I have and frankly that is what it does if yours doesn't don't know what to say other than every barrel is different. Have you ever shot factory Hornady ammo through yours or just reloads??? Not trying to be a Di** just know what it does and you like to tell me it doesn't.

BUT BUT BUT the box says you can possibly get 3900 with a 26 inch barrel if conditions are right.

Soooo 3800 with an 18 inch barrel may be possible as long as someone is using sparkle dust but not in the barrel.

And yes a 26" will produce the 3900 fps in my dad's Cooper.

For comparison sake. I have a Tac20 in both 22" and 16" barrels, both 12t and running the same Hot load of H322. I'm getting Magnetospeed averages of 4200fps in the 22" and 3800 in the 16" with a 32g bullet. The 16 requires a suppressor due to severe blast. The 16" is my calling rifle.

Wow, simply wow. That is one fast barrel. I can't get that through either of my Lilja barreled 22" bolt rifles. Could not get it through the factory barrels either.
