AR Brass Catcher/Deflector

Can you guys give me some advice on these?

Actually, all I really want (or so I think) is a picatinny-mounted deflector that cases can hit and fall straight to the ground instead of flying several feet out and back.
Is this even available? If so, would it still better to go with a catcher that would hold the cases?

I tape the handle of a large minnow net to my stock so the net is covering my chamber. It works great and holds about 10 empties before I have to empty it. Out of the last 300 I have shot, it has only dropped about 5 shells.

Here are a couple pictures of mine. Got a "recycling" bag from walmart for $1.00 and had some spare wood layin around, works like a charm. The straps from the back double as a stablizer when I staple them to the shooting bench.

I have a deflector on an Armalite AR-15 that is mounted under an Eotech sight. It came directly from Rock River for like 20 bucks. Have no gripes about it, and it beats having to stop and empty a bag type catcher.
 
you must be shooting a lot of rounds to have to empty a bag like the one I have. I have shot 200+ and haven't thought of emptying it in one range session. Plus, please correct me if I am wrong, I would much rather dump the bag than hunt around on the dirty ground for brass after being deflected.
 
Hi Chris,

I hate those catchers and most of the deflectors. Kind of reminds me of a colostomy bag for an AR-15. I don't care for searching all over Hell's Half Acre for my cases either. My solution has been tuning the ejector spring length to toss the shells in small pile 3 feet to my right on a tarp. Before I tuned the spring, My RRA would fling the shells 12-15 feet and ding up the cases somewhat.

When the P-Dogging gets fast and furious, the shell catchers still work pretty well.

First I tried the UTG brass catcher that didn't work to well. I got a lot of jams by the brass hanging up it the top part of the bag.

I then bought the TC Picatinny rail deflector only to find out that it was only mountable with a Eotech type sight. So I milled the ring off of a old Weaver type ring to clamp the deflector on and this works great. On a bench most of the brass stays on the bench, off hand the cases drop at my feet.

I looked at the ones they had to offer on line and showed a few to my wife told her what I wanted and she whipped me one up. 2 pieces of green fabric 6 strips of velcro and 15-20 minutes later she was all done. It works awesome and probably cost $3-4 bucks tops.
 
Chris, Check out Model 1 Sales. They carry three models of brass catchers.

I've had one similar to the A3 catcher with the zipper on the side instead of the bottom and with the zipper open, it catches the brass and then drops it right next to my elbow on a piece of carpet that I keep on the bench.

The only problem I've had with it is if I don't get it aligned properly with the ejection port, it will hang up the feeding cycle... My fault, not the catcher's... My shooting buddies on the shooting line really appreciate it and I hate to have to crawl around on the ground grabbing my brass and sorting out the last shooter's leavings..
 
Lots of good ideas here. CW got any pattern for the one the wife worked up? I have been looking also for a clean looking solution to catching brass.

My son suggested building something with mesh or netting to set up next to the bench. It would be fine for just bench and target but a PIA for varmint hunting or predator hunting. I am considering this one.

Yeah...we can go through several hundred rounds in a couple hours, or get a case to last all day. Depends on the predator/hog population and if my gunner is SLACKING or not! I have never tried a catcher just for simplicity reasons and the thought of having to empty it out while flying. Dont have anything against them, I'm not saving cases, so most of them fall out on the ground, or get kicked down in the floorboard. I dont shoot at a range either, so I could see where they could be handy. I just lie a tarp down over to the side when we shoot at home.

I use the TC Accessories deflector and it works great. I also just bought a bag and it works, but the deflectors are almost as good and don't throw the balance of the rifle off at all.
