AR for HD?

I'm not much of an AR guy, but I do have one that I hunt with, a 18" 223 wylde. I've been thinking about buying/building two. One for a truck gun and one for a SHTF home gun. What I'm torn in is the cartridge. Do I go with a 5.56, 300blk, or 350 legend?

I would love to do the 350 b/c of the 150gr bullets. However, It seems that they aren't dependable in an AR as one would want.

From the research I've done the 300blk would suit me better due to the size of the gun I'd like to build...more of a pistol actually. Maybe a 10-12'' barrel. If I go with a 5.56 I would probably need to stick with a 14"?

Help me out...

300 BO pistol. Little different now with IR and hand guard. Use the 150 GD for BO for HD. Shoots about anything including cast (145gr & heavier). This is 10" Kak barrel. If for HD, get a big charging handle.

IIRC this was with a terrible RD. Prev. pic was with SeeAll sight which IMHO is terrible. I did put a 4x scope on it but now use IR for close hogs.

The 300 Black would work well in Home Defense, however barrier penetration "might" be a issue (interior wall), even in the subsonic loads. This what led me to selecting a 9mm for this task. This may not be a issue for you, as in just you and your wife in the home. If not it would work. I can think of one other con to the cartridge and it's ammo mix up in the middle of the night. (the final reason I'm using the 9mm the mag is simply physically different than a 5.56mm series mag.). Those are the two reasons that kept me from that cartridge as a home defense setup, otherwise would be a good choice in my opinion. I'm not against the 300 black, but looking at those two reason is why I don't have one.

I don't have any experience with the 350 Legend so I can't say nay or yay on that cartridge.
I could see this as a beefed up 9mm PCC in one view depending on load. It unlike the 300 Black would definitely not chamber in the 5.56mm chamber if mixed up. Preventing a possible blow up in the middle of the night when one is awoken from a slumber from wrong ammo. If building I'm sure this would be easier to tune than the 9mm which can be challenging if one doesn't pay attention to weight of the BCG/Buffer in a blow back.

The 5.56mm in a 14.5" /14.0" barrel (true M4 Configuration) is quite handy for getting in and out of a truck /vehicle. Still holds enough ballistic advantage with a 69-77 gr load. Personally like mine a lot. In my opinion excels at this role. While it could be used inside the home unsuppressed it's really loud.

And with SBRs being free, just fill out the paperwork, wait 7-10 days and put on a real stock.
very good point,

very good point,

That's actually what I was thinking may be best. A short barrel 300 for the house and a 14'' 5.56 for the truck. I currently use a shotgun for HD, but with things getting so bad these days I'm wanting more capacity. We may keep thinking that it will never happen to us, but man, things are crazy right now and I don't see them getting any better any time soon.

used together would defend against a horde of invaders LOL...
Call me crazy man, but look at all the stuff happening now. It's gotten to the point that the little LCP in your pocket is laughable. It's not just a single person trying to mug/rob you...it's a whole crowd.

I run a 185gr cast @ 1300 fps, about 3x the energy of the 9mm 115gr stuff. But I run 135 gr cast in my 9s. Don't have a truck gun but the BO pistol for running around on the ATV. 165gr cast 40SW for the car. You can get 220gr subs for the BO, I just never shot any, not too worried about wall penetration. Others have had problems with the 350L in an AR. I put a rattler V2 on the pistol and it's great for close hog shots. Even got a rabbit @ 100 with it and 110 vmax.

I really like my 300 BOs. One is an SBR with an 8.5” barrel and a thunderbeast U7 suppressor. Great for hogs and carrying around and when we have civil unrest break out, that’s what I have with me. BUT the negative consideration is NFA requires an SBR and suppressor to be under your control so you have to lock it up when not. (I have a lock box in my truck that helps, but it mostly stays home in the safe!.) Also an SBR requires ATF approval to take out of state. Yeah, dumb!
SOOO if not using a suppressor build a pistol instead of an SBR. Hmm, maybe I should build one…NO!!!

Also an SBR requires ATF approval to take out of state. Yeah, dumb!
yeahhhhh they are proposing a new rule pertaining to that

"ATF is proposing to update the administrative process for transporting lawfully registered National Firearms Act (NFA) firearms within the United States. Under the proposal, individuals transporting NFA firearms for short-term purposes (365 days or fewer) would no longer be required to submit advance notice to ATF or await approval before departing. Individuals transporting NFA firearms for long-term purposes (more than 365 days) or permanent relocation would still submit notice but would not need to await ATF approval before transporting. This change to ATF Form 5320.20 (Form 20), per 27 CFR § 478.28, is intended to remove an unnecessary regulatory burden on law-abiding NFA firearm owners without affecting applicable federal, state, or local legal requirements. " Reference 1140-AA89 Interstate Transport and Temporary Export of National Firearms Act - NPRM

UNDERSTAND THIS is PROPOSED rule change it has not taken effect YET!!!
Here is the proposed ruling link as of right now the period is open for comment in the Federal Register (not ATF)
For those whom don't research well once approved and entered into the federal register here is what it will say for us lowly peons traveling to someplace for a hunt or to visit loved ones.

§ 478.28 Transporting destructive devices and certain firearms.

(a) Transporting in interstate commerce.
The Director specifically authorizes individuals to transport in interstate commerce any machine gun (as defined in 26 U.S.C. 5845(b)), short-barreled rifle, short-barreled shotgun, or destructive device, provided the individual meets the following conditions:

(1) The firearm is properly registered to that individual in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR);

(2) The individual is going to a place where the individual may lawfully possess the firearm;

(3) The firearm is being transported for a lawful purpose; and

(4) The individual carries, in paper (original or copy) or electronic form, the firearm's NFA permit to prove it is registered to the individual in the NFRTR.

(b) Short-term interstate transportation.
If the individual is transporting an NFA firearm as authorized under paragraph (a) of this section for short-term purposes ( i.e., 365 days or fewer), the Director authorizes such short-term transportation without notifying ATF.

(c) Pass-through interstate transportation.
If, during the course of transporting a firearm as authorized under paragraph (a) of this section, the individual passes through a jurisdiction that prohibits the firearm, the Director authorizes such pass-through transportation, provided the individual is transporting the firearm in compliance with 18 U.S.C. 926A (interstate transportation of firearms).

Now there is more but it breaks out to common carriers, and the leading into the requirement of notification on form 20 if longer than 365 days or permanent as in moving.
The Jest of the name "reduce Burden" is honestly to reduce the burden on the ATF in order to process the request. but to come to that realization one must read the whole proposal

This little snippet was in the foot notes,,,
" In 2025, as of July, there were 10,063 Form 20 applications submitted and only 35 of them were for transportation in foreign commerce. Additionally, a survey of the most recent Form 20 submissions found that two of 100 applications were for foreign transportation. "
