Well its official, I will have one of those pin guage sets. Ive beem playing musical bca bolt parts for years getting everything to run.

IIRC the 'official' way of testing is to set on table, bolt face down. If the bolt retracts, too much tolerance. Too much carbon buildup on the bolt tail and rear tolerance is too great. Be very careful of scraping carbon off the tail - takes off metal too. Just soak!

i get my AR cleaned and checked by a gunsmith once a year.

Interesting to find out what will pass as useable ( sold) product and why we have a problematic build. And EXACTLY what is the gas system mechanics. The movement of the bolt was very interesting/informative.

"That’s just really telling you your gas’s rings are worn out" Nope. Rings are the front seal, tail is the back seal.
