What bullet weight would be recomended for a 1-9 twist barrel on an AR. I cant recall which stablaizes heavier/lighter bullets, slow or fast twist. Im hoping to shoot the heavier 69-70 gr. bullets. Thanks all.

I'm going from previous posts, but I think a 1/9 twist might be a little slow for anything above 65gr..

One of my ARs has a 1/7 twist and supposedly it handles the heavier bullets better. I'm trying to work up some loads for it, but can't get to the ranges until the ice/snow is gone as both of the ranges to which I have access are down some pretty steep hills.

Every rifle is different, but experience has shown that 1-9 works well up to about 62 gr, some will shoot the 69 gr bullets and some won't, so the 69 gr bullets are borderline for a 1-9 twist. I've seen a number of photos of 69 gr bullets shot out of a 1-9 that have gone through the target keyholing, some even sideways. If you want to shoot the heavy bullets you need to get a 1-8 or 1-7.

Twist also takes into account the length of the bullet. 1/9 is a good all around twist rate. I have a 1/7 that likes anything over 55gr, but nothing under, even keyholing 45 gr.

Welcome to you new folks if I have not already told you so.

If you buy an AR get a 1 in 8 twist. It will shoot all the bullet weights well if you find a good load. They will also shoot a larger variety of factory loads better. Don't be fooled in believing fast twist barrels won't shoot light bullets. I don't like the 7 twists as have seen them not shoot really well. However, I have a early 80's Colt HBAR that will shoot 40gr Sierra's really well. The so called 7 twist match rifles that shoot well have a 1 in 7.7 which is closer to 1 in 8.

1 in 9's are finicky in my experience in the bullets they want to shoot well. Generaly, 52-60 is about it and they seem to dis-like most factory loads. Some do shoot others well. I don't know who was the one who deemed the 1 in 9 twist the GOD for the AR .223 but it must have been the same guy that thought the 10X fixed power scope was the ultimate sniper scope as well.

If you reload look at 52 HP's or 55gr Sp's. If you use factory, look to BH's 52 HP, 55 SP, or 60gr V-Max.

I could shoot all of the 55/60 polymer tips, and 69/68's to 77 grainers well except the 75 A-Max with my 9 twist Hart. That bullet is supposed to be marginal in 9 twist and an 8 twist is recommended for it.

I shoot a bushmaster varminter witha 1-9 twist,I tried the 69 grain black hills match and could not get them too group.
Loaded some 53 grain HP match and they all go into one hole.
