AR Guys: What's your favorite sling?

Just curious what everyone likes out there. I'm contemplating picking up such an item. I'm thinking something along the lines of a 3-position Tac. The rifle I'm thinking of adding this to also has a harris bi-pod on the forward sling stud. I believe Harris has an adaptor for attaching the slings as well, but are there better attachment options I might want to consider? Also, the rifle has a standard A2 full buttstock on it. Thanks.
 
I use padded super slings on all of my shotguns and rifles. They are easily adjustable and have a thumb loop. The padding really helps on long walks and are easily cinched up to shoot with the sling. I have yet to find anything I like better! Just my 2 cents worth /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Although, with the exception of the one I bought for the new and heavy 700 VLS, mine are not padded.
They're available at WalMart with the swivel connectors already attached for about $20.



Ooops! Sorry! I somehow missed the first part of the title referring to AR's. My rifles are not AR's.

Best way for carry I have found is with the muzzle /barrel down reguardless of sling. Most AR slings need to be longer in length than on bolt guns. I looked at a single point sling, but was told they were great for tactical applications, but not so good for long walks.

Seems like I've been a "sling junkie" over the years, I've tried so many different styles and makes. But the best I've used to date is the Butler Creek Comfort Stretch sling. They come in several camo patterns plus brown or black, which is what I use. I have one on my AR and it helps considerably on keeping the felt weight of the gun down. They have just enough stretch to them to make the gun feel lighter without bouncing like it's attached on a rubber band! I tried a Vero Vellini neoprene sling some years back and it made the gun feel like it was bouncing on a shock cord or something! The Butler Creek's are pretty well all I'm using right now until something better comes along!

I've slung... slinged... uhhh, put slings on a number of my rifles and shotguns in the past. I find a sling essential for a number of applications. However, I am curious specifically about experience with slings for AR-15 type rifles.

Crapshoot, agreed on the muzzle down carry for AR's. Even when I'm carrying by hand for longer distances, I usually end up holding it in a position with the muzzle pointing downward or shouldering the rifle. it just feels right given the weight distribution. Anyway, I think that there could be some applications where having the rifle slung in a low or medium "ready" position could be advantageous in coyote hunting. Even if this hypothesis eventually proves to be false, I'd like having something I could potential use in defensive, working, or 3 gun match situations. Anyway, what types and models have you liked?

emsemt911, what is it that you like better about the single point oppossed to the 3 point? What applications do you use it in? BTW, love the avatar! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I really appreciate you guys humoring on this. I like to get all available facts and/or opinions on stuff like this.
 
It really depends on what you want the sling to do.
Do you just want it for carry?
Do you use a sling as part of your shooting position.

Three point/tactical and single point slings are a great way to carry the gun. They support the weight and positions the gun across the body for fast access or transition to pistol.

If you use a sling as part of the complete shooting system a standard M-16 sling is a great choice. It has the hook end for the butt stock, and the quick release buckle allows for easy adjustment for the shooting position your in. The Latigo sling is a better sling, but a little more complicated for the novice.

I strongly recommend all rifle shooters learn how to shoot with a Hasty sling and loop sling. There will be times you may have to take the shot prone, kneeling, sitting or standing. You may not be able to use a bipod. Competition shooters don't use bipods. They shoot with the sling and can out shoot 99.9% of the hunters.

Bottom line is the sling can be a vital part of the shooting system and can make you a better shooter, or it can just carry your gun.

I use the Giles tactical sling and love it. I've heard the Ching sling is also a great sling. How long of a barrel do you have? You know how vertically challenged I am. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The only thing to remember is when you stoop down to pick up your coyote, remember that your muzzle will be buried in the dirt if you don't whip your rifle around the front before you kneel or stoop down.

I havent found one yet. Right now I am using a cheap used nylon padded sling mounted upside down. I found it in the bargin can at the local gun shop. It sucks, but the price was right. But after a day of hunting, my shoulder is about rubbed raw. I reallylike the looks of the 1 point sling with the quick release clip like the one found here . But not sure of how comfortable it would be. There for I am hesitant to shell out the dough.
 
I use a 2 point sling that hooks onto the front sight post, goes under my left arm, back over my right shoulder and connects to the side of my buttstock. It keeps the gun in the ready position with muzzle down or horizontal yet it keeps the gun from bouncing side to side while walking like a single point can and I don't have an extra strap to get hung up in like a 3 point.

I also just use a regular sling for carry with the muzzle up but am liking the hands free 2 point sling better.
 
Don't recall the mfg. But I use [cheap] 1" wide White Nylon webbed sling. It wraps around my forearm, quite well. I camo-tape it for Fall hunting.

I use a CQB Solutions three point sling on my AR for coyote hunting. Great flexibility and quick shots no problem. Distributes weight very good even for the long humps to stand!

great slings for all around hunting. only ones I buy or recommend to friends. your description fits my experience too.
 
The only one I would recommend would be the V-Tac sling made by Viking Tactics hands down the best sling on the market for a AR type rifle.It is used by many top 3-gun competitors I think Blackhawk is carrying them now if not Viking Tactics has a web site where you can buy direct.
