Ar in 243 or 6.5

I have a interest in retiring my 243 to a hunting only for my grandson, and going for a AR in 243 as I have many componets. The 6.5 also appeals to me as I shoot a 6.5-284, and also have many componets. My goals would be to better the use of a 6.5 for PD and varmint hunting for better barrel life. Or to use the 243 for longer range varmint hunting. In the 6.5 range I am clue less as to what to go to, like 6.5x55 or a 260, or anything in that group. I ask your advice.

All of the cartidges you named are to long for the AR15. You will have to go for an AR-10 (much heavier and expensive than the Ar-15) unless you go with the .243 wssm or the 6.5 Grendal.

I've got a DTECH 243 WSSM that fits right on my AR15 lower. It is a very accurate rifle, ballistics are between a 6mm Rem and a 240 Whby depending on the load. PM sent.

falfire thanks for the heads up. Do you have some input on brass for the 243 wssm or the 6.5 wssm as to availability and forming. I would do a upper in either or both.
To my fellow Iowan the 243 will be handed down to the first grandson 5+, after Gordy Gritters shakes it down. www.gordysgunsmithshop.com he will build you a 1000 yd rifle, he did it for me. Going to join the party?

I would probably use the 25WSSSM brass for the 6.5WSSM upper, a simple neck sizer die would do the trick. However I would certainly recommend that all reloads for the WSSM be full length resized to prevent feed and function issues. The brass can be purchased thru MidwayUSA or any number of retailers as can the 243WSSM brass. I will sometimes just grab a bag of 50 at my local Sportsman's Warehouse.

The 6.5WSSM is not available thru any manufacture as a ready built upper but I know Dtech has already built a custom 6.5WSSM. Mike would be the one with the most knowledge regarding bullet application and limitations as the magazine may restrict some of the longer 6.5 bullets available.

The 243 on the other hand is very adaptable using a wide varity of bullets and a fast twist 6mm tube will send the 107's and 115 DTAC bullets out there with authority if you are looking for a long distance shooter that is.

I have the Olympic Arms upper in 243WSSM, it an awesome caliber for the AR15 platform. For a coyote/deer gun the 243WSSM and the 25WSSM is the cats azz for the AR15. I've killed 3 nice mulie bucks and my wife killed her first mulie buck last season all with the 243WSSM AR.

Good luck to ya /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
