ar optics....what? huh? help

Just remember when it comes to optics you get what you pay for.

The choice is yours which would you rather have:

(4) $100 scopes sitting in a shoebox in your closet
(2) $200 scopes sitting in a shoebox in your closet
(1) $400 scope sitting on your rifle

I've got a Vortex Viper 2x7 on my hunting AR. I have been very pleased with that scope for it's purpose. If you are looking for something out to 200 only I would go 2x7 or even a 1x4. It will make your shots quicker on live game using the lower powered scope as your not looking at a scope full of fur.

predatorNC, i hunt western nc from surry to ashe counties, and typically find myself wanting less magnification than more. i started calling with a leupy vx2 3-9x40, but in the dense woods i found that the nitrex (weaver) 1.5-5x32 that did reside on my 30-30 was just the ticket. now it's on my ar and i have yet to use it at 5 power. if you're in the low country, disregard all of that. anyway, these would be my choices:

if i were on a budget:

if price were no concern:

i'm personally on the weaver and bushnell bandwagon...but they're what looks best to my eye along with the sightron that resides atop my f-class rifle. bottom line is everyone see's a little differently; if you live near elkin, you're more than welcome to come up and check the scopes residing in my safe. good luck with the new black rifle and the disease that will follow.....

Ain't that the truth. I finally got the AR bug earlier this year. I had a Leupold 3x9x40 getting lonesome in the safe after I went to a higher powered scope on my 22-250 since the prariedogs are kind of scarce and the ones that are left are long range shooting. It fit right on the little S&W M&P and in my opinion is perfect for my conditions. I live on the plains. Look at Tony Tebbe's pictures to see what it's like as I live on the other side of town. If I had different conditions such as timber and/or brush I might find something else to be a better choice.

I think scope choice totally depends on what you want it for. Prairie dogs at 200 yards and coyotes at 50 will be best served by different scopes. 1-4 HD SS is extremely well received by those who can afford it. I personally chose a 4-14.5 Burris E1 and like it, very sturdy and has a nice fine varmint reticle. I think higher magnification helps on a varmint rifle. If you want "close quarter" - which I don;t know why, I'd use a shotgun then - you may wish to buy a mainstream 3-9x40. If on a budget I would buy a Redfield, as good as it gets for the price. In fact however, Zeiss Conquest 3-9 is very competitively priced and can be had for like 350 sometimes, and probably is the best value in 3-9 in my opinion.
