Vulcan good or bad and why, thinking about buying one and before we get started I cant afford a 900 to 2000 dollar gun so keep it realistic. Thinking about buying an AR before the next dictatorship outlaws them again

Thanks,Stan

Stan,
Don't know about Vulcan, one way or the other. I was just in Sportsmans Warehouse this past weekend, and saw the 'name brand' guns, Bushmaster, Rock River, for $900 to $1,100.

I don't think that price range is 'non-realistic' for a quality AR platform. I just got a Dtech from Mike Milli, and had I not been putting together my dream gun, a semi-custom would have been in the price range of the off the shelf models.

I was told a long time ago, and should have heeded the advice, that you only buy quality once. It would have saved me a lot of money and frustration in the long run.

Just my .02 on the matter, YMMV!

Regards,
Tim

You can build your own using quality parts for way under $900. Go to a big name reliable company for a complete upper for reliability.

Stripped lower $100
Lower parts kit $60
Charging handle $30
Buttstock w/buffer and spring $100
Upper w/bolt carrier group $450-500

(I bought a heavy barrel upper from a guy at a gunshow for $305 without a bolt carrier group. It's been outstanding!)

Thanks guys and for the record I am not trying to go bottom shelf I am also looking at a stag arms for about 150 more but its really stretching it. Problem is I bought 2 other guns last month and kinda cleaned my play money out. just looking for the best bang for the buck and have been told Vulcans are shooters with quality lowers so I thought I could always build on that as the money became avalible.

Thanks again

Hi Stan..

When I was in search of my first AR, I was warned by more than a few AR owners and dealers to stay away from the Vulcan. While the price tag may look appealing... As they say, you get what you pay for. After comparing them side by side with other brands, I just couldn't justify the savings for what I felt was a lesser quality gun. So let the flaming begin...

So if it's at all possible... Save a few extra nickels and dimes and go with a quality solution rather than a quick fix.

Good luck on your quest...

I believe Vulcan is one those companies who keep changing their name due to bad reputation.

I didn't mean to imply you were looking for bottom shelf. You can have an excellent rifle for a good price is you want to build it yourself. The most critical part is the upper so that's why that should come from a good company.

However, if this is to be used as a self defense application, I would go 100% factory build from Colt or LMT.

I for the most part collect Rugers so a mini is real hard to stay away from but the minute of milk jug reputation is holding me back so I am trying to justify spending so much more for an AR Man this is a tuff descion but like I said I want another assult style rifle before its to late again and I would like one that is usable for hunting to. I have an SKS and it a blast to shot and cheap but lets face it not going to be taking it out for a true hunt anytime soon for anything other than beer cans and paper silohoute targets

When I started researching for my leap into the AR platform I found that most AR people thought the Vulcan/Heese name was major bad juju. Lotsa dislike aimed at this brand, enough to keep me away. Aparently they are constantly changing their moniker and not doing much to change the product. Take a look at Olympic Arms or a kit rifle(JT Sales and Model1 Sales come to mind) if you want to save a few bones and have a quality AR. Do lots of research and don't be afraid to make phone calls and ask questions. 900.00 is alot of money to put into a rifle to shoot a dog with, make sure you get what you want. Do some browsing here: www.atlanticfirearms.com they are a great company and are quick and painless to deal with.

Lots of different ways to go for not a lot of money, and still come up with a quality weapon.

How does $579.95 sound for a complete AR, less shipping, and lower transfer fee (if applicable)?

16" lower kit (flat-top or A2) with lots of options available if desired $469.95. I've ordered from them before, and have been very satisfied, in quality of parts, accuracy, and service. You can get a 20" for the same $$, and also the same number of options if you prefer that barrel length.

LMT stripped lower with Lauer roll mark. $110.00

OR I've seen quite a few posts from folks that have ordered the "bargain bin" rifles from CMMG for somewhere in the neighborhood of $580.00. Refurbished, but don't recall any negative posts.

That's just a couple of ways to go if you're looking to get into an AR fairly inexpensively. Having personal experience with J&T, and LMT, I have no qualms about recommending them. I have no personal experience with CMMG. I've seen very few positive posts re: Vulcan, BUT I have no personal experience with them, positive, or negative.

There are quite a few different ways to get into an AR for approx. the same amount of money, if you dig around a little bit. These are just a couple of those examples.

Hangtime.

+ 1 on J&T. Three friends and I built 4 AR's from J&T Kits last year. All 4 shoot moa or better.

The folks at J&T will custom build uppers or kits to your personal specs. Whatever you do, use a good trigger. We used JP's and are very satisfied. However, I'm certain the Timney's, Chip McCormack's and Jewell's are very good, as well.

We saved a little $ by using Essential Arms Lowers on our builds. Very good quality IMO and manufactured in the USA. If you buy from Essential don't try to fax FFL's, though. Their fax is not on a dedicated line and takes several tries to get through. My FFL nearly gave up trying to connect.

+2 on JT..

I've mentioned this before but if you get enough guys together to do it, break the 3k mark and you get wholesale pricing. Each order after that has to be over 1k.. So 2 kits essentially. Their magazines all come with magpul followers too..

11.50 for a 30 and 12 bucks for the 12 if you're on the whlsale pricing scale.

Our next order should be here next week. We've got 6 kits and 1 upper plus a plethora of other goodies coming.

My bull barrel kit the first time cost me 470. I fluted it for 30 bucks more and added a different grip and badger tac. latch. 550 or so plus my lower and I was set.

This time I'm getting their tactical lightweight upper in a kit with a freefloat handguard, weaver gas block, badger and full magpul miad grip assy. upgrade. That one will end up at right around 525 or so.

Their std CAR kit runs 400 with wholesale pricing. So if you play your cards right you can be all said and done with a complete ar for 480-500 bucks.

I'll also say DEFINITELY check out their lowers. If any of you have seen a lower with a better finish I want to hear about it. They make Stag and DPMS look like crap. It's almost a duratouch finish compared to the rough/raw parkerized/dry look compared to the two I've mentioned. I saw a Superior once that I wouldn't give away.

16" with their porting/fluting and Yankee hill handguard
