AR trigger question

I built an AR from a used complete DPMS lower that I purchased locally and a used complete .223 Bushmaster Predator upper that I purchased here from a PM member. The complete lower I was told came off a 9mm upper. So I understand it has a lighter hammer for the 9mm??

I took it to the range the other night for the first time and my first shot(s) were doubles. Kinda surprised me. If I slowly squeeze the trigger like I do for rifles it will double tap. If I slap the trigger like a shotgun it will fire one round. The trigger has some creep then hits the wall and then with a little more squeeze it will fire. I'm thinking that a new trigger group is needed. What are your thoughts? Have anyone had this before?

Everything went togther without any troubles. The upper shot the 45 gr hollow point Winchester white box ammo pretty well. I'll have to load some of my own when I get some brass saved up. What loads have you guys found that works well in the 20" Bushy Predator uppers?

Thanks for your help and thoughts.

Ohhhh, doubles are scary. Don't like em one bit.

Sounds like it's got a 2 stage trigger in it that somebody has tinkered with

OR

a 2 stage adjustable trigger of some sort that is out of adjustment and needs adjusted.

In the first case scenerio you probably will need a new trigger of your choice.

In the 2nd case, maybe take it to a gunsmith to have checked over.

I'm not very familiar with these triggers. What does a 2 stage trigger do? I'd like a trigger as close to a standard bolt rifle as possible. No creep and 3-4 lb. Is that possible in an AR?

I have a stage 2 armalite trigger/LPK and really like it (not saying its any better than others, however, as I'm by no means a trigger expert)

You basically have a very light trigger creep to pull out (stage 1) and then reach a stopping point with a very light trigger pull that breaks crisp.

It won't break accidentally as you have a little bit of travel. I feel they are safer than a really light single stage trigger due to this, especially when wearing gloves, cold weather, etc.

You are describing a single stage trigger. There are less expensive (& more expensive for that matter) triggers available, but Timney makes a great drop in single stage trigger in either 3# pr 4#. Easy to install & break clean; the 3# is my choice for a hunting trigger.

I'd agree. Sombody tried to smooth it up and took a bit too much off. That's VERY easy to have happen on an AR.

The good thing is, the parts are dirt cheap and dead easy to replace.

I wouldn't be shooting it around any cops until I was sure it's fixed.

Just sayin.

Both single and double stage triggers will double tap if not adjusted properly. If it is a non-adjustable trigger that someone has worked over then you need to replace some parts like Evil_Lurker posted.

Too late Evil. The night I shot the AR my friend (county Sherrif) was with me sighting in his Encore. I was wondering what he would say when it shot the two rounds the first time but he thought I tried to do it. He didn't seem to get excited when I said that I didn't try to do it.

It sounds like I'll have to lood at the Timney trigger.

Thanks for your help everyone!

BATF would probably get excited. Then we'd be sending you soap on a rope.

I'd get it fixed ASAP!

I see no criminal intent to violate the rules but, I would get it fixed asap. If you start having fun with it like it is, plan on getting a new address and moving in with a guy named Bubba. kwg

If you were on a bench you most likely are bump firing it. Any time you
lightly squeeze the trigger on a semi you have to be holding onto the
gun. As 223 have no recoil to speak of it's easy to let them float on the
bags. And bump firing is not illegal. If you are keen to the
firing rate of the ar15 you can tell the difference. Bump
fires sound like two really fast shots, semi auto gone full sounds more like one.

The shots were from a bench off a sand bag. I was not holding the forend.

I will need to get a different trigger as I'm not happy with how it works now. From what I've seen at Midway there are many triggers to choose from.

I don't want a new address and I don't want to meet a guy named Bubba!

Thanks.

While you are lucky to have a reasonable and understanding LEO that probably knows a little of your character...You could easily wind up like the guy in Michigan or Wisconsin about a year ago that was shooting a borrowed AR that went 'Double' on him and someone else at the range (what I call a range Nazi) filed a report with the BATF about him shooting a fully auto weapon....

Federal charges were filed and I think he was found guilty of possession, even with 'experts' testifying that it was not a fully auto fire control group...an any rate, he's broke and destitute, just over legal defense costs...Pull that trigger group as soon as possible until you can replace it...You don't need that kind of hassle...

Did you remove the trigger group yet? Don't be fooled: ignorance of the law is NO EXCUSE! If you are found to be in posession of an automatic weapon by the ATFE, you WILL go to club Fed! You have to understand that the same people who make the rules are the same ones who would test the rifle out and if they can MAKE it double, you're done.
