Looking for a dedicated varmint upper. Have basically decided on the RRA wilson barrel upper but can't decide on EOP or flat top with high rings.

Any thoughts, PROS/CONS

All advice is appreciated. jcs

Howdy, have the RRA EOP varmint[or varminteer..too lazy to look] w/24", 1:12 barrel and I love it.

I'm just an old "trigger puller" but after messing with scopes mounted on carry-handles for years, thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

High rings are probably fine but EOP looks way better, IMHO. Probably some versatility issues I'm not aware of.

I am thinking of making a nylon strap carry handle that would to go thro the slots in the EOP upper and looped up each of the scope . It would be light, quiet and handy for a carry gun, plus you could leave it on the gun all the time. (so I won't forget it!)

I bought the flat top and the only regret I have is that I didn't get the EOP. I tried to talk the neighbor into it when he bought, now he regrets not getting it. He went with the riser blocks and I went with the Warne Ultra High mounts. It would've been nice to use any standard ring I wanted with the EOP upper instead. It looks like sight picture would be easier to acquire. Some people just can't see through my scope because it sits so low. Makes the charging handle hard to reach also.

The EOP gets my vote also. I have two with this upper receiver and like it quite well.

The ONLY drawback to them is not being able to use an extended mounting rail if one is needed. But for the majority of AR shooters that will not be an issue.

I prefer an EOP on a hunting rifle. It makes it very easy to get back to hunting if you had a scope problem or a ring problem. You wouldn't have to drive everywhere to get a set of high or ultras.

I use a YHM one piece riser and medium height Burris Signature Zee rings on my flat top AR. This allows rings of any height, plus with the Burris Sig. Zee rings you get no ring marks on your scope. MI VHNTR

Good point
I also think alot of that depends on the scope too, (where the turrts are located on the tube). Thats the reason I am glad I didnt go with the EOP, The Burris scope I got had to be pushed forward far enough that the turrets where at the end of the rail, then a 1 piece mount would have been too high, and rings wouldnt have worked either. If you had the scope you where going to use, check it out with a friends AR or one at a gun shop if available? Just a thought. Heres a pic so you can see how the turrets layed out on the rail.

I've got a flat top and I had to get ultra-high rings in order to get the scope high enough for my comfort level. If I had it to do over again, I would have gotten the EOP since I plan to have a scope permanently mounted as long as I own it.

Welcome to the board 22.

I guess I am different. I use the high rings and don't have any problems. Don't like the riser deal as this is something else that can come loose and lose zero. It may be me but don't see a difference in the EOP w/rings and the high versions on the std. flattop. Height should be the same.

My RRA Varmont 24 A4, 1 in 8 twist, has the same Larue Tactical mount that Furhunter has pictured above. This is one solid mount and goes off and on without loosing zero. It also accomodates the use of longer eye relief scopes like the Leupold VX-III 6.5-20X50 I have mounted. At almost $200 it's not cheep but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I suffered over the same question on the Flat Top or EOP. I just figured the Flat top was a bit more versatile should I decide to reconfigure the rifle sometime in the future. I would be happy with either setup. I have been getting some sub quarter inch 3 shot groups at 110 yards. If the wind isn't blowing too hard it's easy keep them under a half inch.

I have two flat tops, both with the LaRue Tac mount shown in Furhunters post. It puts your eye at the same level as the original open sights on the AR rifles. Like Fur said, they ain't cheap--but they are great mounts. Doing it again, I'd do exactly the same thing.
