AR vs Bolt Action .223

That is also one thing i have heard about the ars, and correct me if im wrong, is that to get really good accuracy out of them you have to reload to do it.

Let me correct you...THAT IS WRONG. Most AR's will shoot anything you feed them accurately. Mine shoots EVERYTHING but the cheap Wolf ammo accurately.

Do they make a benchrest AR?

Have not seen AR set any BR records, not even at the local club level. AR is very accurate, lots of guy used them in XC matches but it isn't an one holer, not one that will bring home the cake in a BR match anyway.

At the top of the accuracy game ARs won't make it, it's true. Neither will most repeating rifles, including repeating bolt actions.

Then again, it would be virtually impossible to put the kind of money tied up in a world class benchrest rifle into an AR.

The AR platform is more accurate than most, and as accurate as all but the very best bolt action rifles largely because inherent in it's design, it doesn't require the same degree of precision fit that a bolt action rifle does (the bolt locks to the barrel, not the action).

A bolt action can be machined precisely enough (at great expense) to overcome and surpass the inherent accuracy advantage of an AR, but most of us don't shoot benchrest, and don't want to spend the $4,000 to $10,000 needed to be truly competitive in that game on a hunting rifle.

The only reason I did not choose to purchase the AR platform was after spending some time on AR15.com troubleshooting forum. I did not want to spend that much money and risk having problems with the rifle. Some day when money is not a problem I would like to get one.

Greetings, This subject could go on for weeks. I, like you own and use both. My hunting AR's are my now converted High Master "leg" guns, that now sport flat-top receivers, and optics. However, one of my favorite bolt guns is a Remington LTR .223 1x9 HB. Install good optics, and adjust the trigger, and these little inexpensive guns make the kills with the same medium range loads used in my NM.AR's. When "Assault II" comes back, libs cannot touch it! There's another subject..... S/F

Gents,

Thanks for all of your input so far, I guess what it boils down to for me is whether or not an AR is more gun than I need. I from the "Keep It Simple Stupid" school of thought. So for those of you who own both, how often do you find yourself in a situation with your bolt gun where you find youself saying, "Man, I really wish I had my AR with me instead of this bolt gun. It would have made a big difference." Thanks again for your input.

I own both, and use the AR for fun shooting, and still hunt primarily with my bolt guns.

AR once in awhile. I would probably use the AR more if it was in a larger caliber than 223.

I have never missed a coyote with my bolt I thought I could have gotten with an AR. To me its the first shot that counts.

But the AR is fun though................but to me nothing beats the lightweight bolt as a predator gun.

Out here in the west where coyotes often (well ok, sometimes) come in in pairs or triples or even more, and a shot at that coyote that's 200 yards out (or more) and in afterburner mode is still possible, an AR gives a definite advantage. In heavy timber etc where you will only get a chance for one shot no matter how many come in, not so much.
