AR vs bolt action

I use an AR when hunting for hogs or open fields. When I’m hunting bottoms, woods, pipelines or just tighter areas in general, I prefer a BA. Mainly because of less action noise, runs cleaner, and I don’t have to mess with a brass catcher.

Well.....living in Illinois I sure don't have to worry about my rifle dirtying up due to a supressor

I've often wondered how much louder the suppressed AR sounds at the target end of things. From the shooting side it seems substantial. Next time we're at the camp that has the trenches throughout the range I'm going to find out. Just not ready to stand downrange otherwise!

I generally start with a prey (rabbit) and then move to howls. Lots of them paired or pairing up now so sometimes start with howls.
Randy Anderson said he never scared one away starting with a howl but I think I have. Sometimes have thrown the kitchen sink at them. Remember one I tried everything, rabbit, birds, rodent, howls, fawn, and he just stayed out there. Finally tried kitten cries as a last hail marry and here he comes. Go figure. Just kind of by feel of the territory I'm in, experience, and educated guess all thrown in together. I've been night hunting 3 years and before that very difficult day hunting here. I'm still learning. I think the main thing is to try to put down your target. If you miss, you just educated one and that's one thing I try not to do.

I started with a rxq30v on a lighter bolt 22-250 and then a xm38 on a 243 bolt. This year I switched to a ar 224 valkyrie 75 grain eld and a ar10 6.5 creedmoor 95 grain v max.1.5 high at 100 yds, zero at 200. Not much fur damage.I won't be going back to a bolt.

I've done extensive decibel testing with suppressors and with ARs you are hearing ejection port noise. At the muzzle, which is the loudest, they are extremely close as well as downrange. The biggest reason ARs are usually "louder" is because guys run much shorter barrels and ejection port noise.

I love bolt guns and almost always carry one for daytime stands but IMO ARs are way more effective for night use.

Kino, that's good to know. Thanks for sharing the info. My rifles are the same caliber and barrel length so it is the ejection port noise I'm hearing.
