AR15 vs. Bolt Gun for coyote hunting?

Have they started using ARs in bench rest contest yet?

I'm old and set in my ways. Killed more coyotes then you can count with a bolt action, why change?

I got to shoot all the automatic rifles the Army had back in the early 60s, that was enough.

No it don't songdog, there are those that think an AR has that kind of accuracy, that's why I said that.

I remember when you'd go into a gun store and all you'd find were bolt actions, lever actions and maybe a couple semis. Times changed after Nam, the market was flooded with surplus rifles like AKs, M-16s and easy to find ammo. Now everybody shoots a 223 and has a AR-15.

What ever happen to the good old boys with there swifts, 222 and 22-250s? Bet there is still a few out there.lol
 
I love this debate, its always interesting. i love my AR, i love my CZ 527 kevlar. THe AR shines when more than one comes in, i love being able to stay on sight for multiple shots. Of course im very comfortable with haveing been a jar head for 17 yrs. BUT i use the CZ on cold days, the AR has frozen on me more than once even after degreasing it and using proper lube. Haveing been in MYN cold weather warfare, the AR lacks there. But other than that its the ultimate coyote rifle, handy, accurate, large ammo capacity, light (enough).

Hey Kid, if the title of the OP was " AR15 vs. Bolt Gun for benchrest shooting" How many here would honestly claim the AR would be their first choice?

By the way, how many true benchrest guns do YOU see out in the field being used for coyotes? I don't see any, mostly I see field grade bolt guns purchased at Walmart, Sportsmans, Cabela's and the like. Not what I would call a true benchrest quality firearms.

Many here enjoy the AR15 and AR10's and no one here is trying to push the AR onto anyone.

I used to hunt with a guy that would bring his AK47 along on coyote hunts, 30 round mag filled with surplus ammo and all. Certainly not my choice of weapon for coyotes but he enjoyed shooting it and to him it was just fun, so I was good with that. I really could care less if he brought along a sharp stick to throw at coyotes, we were having fun and that is what it's all about.

By the way, I would support anyone that wanted to take an AR to a benchrest comp, I think anytime you can have fun. do it. Like we used to say at the drags, "run whatcha brung" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
 
I love a good bolt as much as anyone. [beeep], I was ribbed by buddies for holding onto them for so long.

There is still nothing like the feel of a good bolt gun, period...

My point is that narrow-mindedness is the downfall of us all...

Also, FWIW I'd not want to be shooting against one of my AR's in an accuracy contest...grin...

Killing multiple coyotes on a stand can be done with a bolt action as well as any semi. People tend to not concentrate as hard when they know they have more then one shot.

GregW, when you get to be old and you want to be narrow minded, you sure have that right lol.

FALFire, I really don't care what people use when they go hunting. I know what I'm going to use and that's all that counts to me, no big deal. Happy Hunting, even if you shoot an AR lol.
 
In this part of the country it is the norm to call in multiples. Probably 1 out of 6 successful setups is a single (that we SEE). Anyway, there is no doubt in my mind that an AR would be the better firearm on stand out here. The idea that your first shot is more accurate with a bolt because you MUST shoot more accurately due to the time involved chambering another round just doesn't flush. That is like saying you shoot more accurately with a muzzle loader because you have to get closer to your prey. Fellas, if you can't shoot straight with an AR (for whatever reason) then it is your fault - not the fault of the equipment. Sure, there are some ARs out there that don't shoot well - but it is the exception (much like buying a bolt action that doesn't shoot well). And as far as accuracy versus follow-up shots . . . well, there is a reason the Garande helped win WWII, and it wasn't because our soldiers couldn't shoot it straight.
And, FWIW, I'd take a DPMS chambered in .243, a US Optics on top with the Horus Vision reticle inside (if I could only get the wife to agree . . .)
