Here's what I'm thinkin.

2A xanthos striped Upper/lower.
M5 buffer kit.
Aero BCG. Not sure on this. Any input appreciated.
Raptor charging handle
2A handguard
16" ballistic adv gvt 1:10 barrel
BAD Ti pins
Next Intent adj Ti block
Elf 3gun trigger
Smokes carbon buttstock
V7 3gun LW safety
Smokes alum castle nut
V7 mag hardware
Ergo grip

Anybody have a better option for a lightweight build. Trying to get under 6#.

You do realize these shorter large frame AR's have a fairly violent recoil impulse right?

Not sure going so light weight in a build is going to be what you want once you start shooting it.

Just my $.02

Bowhunter. I have shot a tc bolt action i. .308 and you are right. It does have bit of recoil. I havent shot a .308'AR platform but figured the action would mitigate a fair amount of recoil. Def may wanna reconsider the buttstock and perhaps look into another caliber. Im open to suggestions as this is in the planning stage she

I have found shooting lighter weight ammo, specifically the 110gr TAP from Hornady, is a pleasure to shoot out of my 16" barreled Aero M5 builds, I have four of them. The heavier loads such as the 168 TAP or FGMM are quite stout...

My 16" rifles are often confused as being .223 AR15's at first by some who handle them until I point out they are large frame... in other words, they don't weigh all that much considering.

I used SLR rails, which are light-weight, and MagPul STR stocks in the builds, nothing fancy. Standard parts complete the rest.

If you have LOTS of $$ to throw at a build, carry on, but personally I think your parts list contains expensive parts that won't really contribute much to the overall build's performance.

For function, I'd stick with a standard weight/design BCG. The large frame builds can be picky enough from the start to get to run right, no sense in adding boutique parts, which in my opinion, just might create a problem.

WHAT IS YOUR PRIMARY USE FORTHIS BUILD?

Hey... all this is just food for thought...

Appreciate the input Bowhuntr. My primary use is going to be a carry rifle for coyote hunting and we often do long walk ins so that's why I am building it light. I have a LW .223 AR that is 6.5# with optic and it's a pleasure to carry. I'm just thinking that a .308 or a 6.5creed would be a fun alternative.
I had the aero m5e on the list but the 2A set is a half pound lighter and I am kind of a sucker for building trick stuff so the build list is taking me down a dark path😜.
Are you running adj gas blocks on your builds? From what I have read adj gas blocks are critical to make em cycle right and can also be used to reduce recoil.
What barrels are you using? Brand, profile, twist, length..?

All barrels are Ballistic Advantage... 1-10 twist, four are 16" (two are what BA calls their Tactical Govt. profile and are QPQ finished, two are SS) and one is 18".

All builds have SLR adjustable gas blocks as I have a suppressor. Minus the suppressor, not sure I'd need the adjustable GB, many guys builds work fine w/o an AGB.

Keep in mind... an adjustable gas block won't help with more gas as the gas' limiting factor will be the port hole drilled in the barrel. Seems many are over-gassed and the AGB helps in that regard.

I don't see how they reduce felt recoil as either there is enough gas to efficiently cycle the action or not... BUT... in the case of over-as, then yes, it can help reduce some of the gas.

For your needs, I'd just build an economical 16" build and shoot bullets in the 110gr-130gr range, I think you will like the combination.

I'd stick with the .308, I could not get the best the 6.5CM had to offer in a gas gun w/o seeing pressure signs and damaged brass.

Another really great alternative is sticking with the AR15 size frame and doing a 6.5 Grendel build. This year, I finally got into the Grendel scene and I've had great success putting hogs down. The Grendel will give you more terminal performance than the .223, come in a light-weight package, and offer something unique to your personal armory. Ammo seems readily available here where I live although I will be loading my own once I get a good brass supply.

I run a Supressor as well and I know that over gassing is a issue. I also shoot lefty and the overgassing is lame as a lefty. I have a long range .223 that I use for Pdogs... It's bassed off of a JP lower and a Gibbz arms side charge left eject upper with adj block and a JP captured spring. It's a nice setup for bench work but too heavy to carry.
I am fairly new to this scene so I am not up to speed on some of the options. I know nothing about a 6.5 Grendel but sounds interesting. How much will I give up to the .308 as far as range and energy. I assume it falls between the .308 and .223 but closer to the .223? I will be shooting factory as I am not reloading. .223 and .308 are both readily available. How about Grendel?

You can research the 6.5G and come to your own conclusion... it's a VERY good cartridge and quite capable.

Visit the 6.5G forum, lots of information there... here is a short "to the point" article about 6.5G vs. .308 Win.

[beeep] you Bowhuntr. Haha. Just kidding appreciate the input man.
Now I'm off and running with Grendel dreams. Very interesting option. Will be substantially cheaper too. One of my negatives on the large frame lightweight is gonna be muzzle rise and not being able to see impact or get back on target as effectively as the .223 and the Grendel may be the perfect comprimise. What are your thoughts on barrel length and twist Grendel?

There is still something intriguing about large farm AR though.

Like many cartridges, the 6.5G does better velocity wise with a longer tube, say from 16" vs. 20" so I see it (barrel length) as a trade off between max velocity gain and weight for carry.

From my reading, it seems a 1-8 twist is the general desire.

No doubt you can build a more economical 6.5G suitable weight wise for carry that will keep up with a .308 "for the most part" with much less recoil.

My first and so far only 6.5G build I went with Alexander Arms 16" SS barrel. Was $200 and so far has not disappointed me. I use it mostly for hog hunting at night with a PVS-14 and IR laser.

I liked the 6.5G so much I jumped on the group buy at 6.5 Grendel Forums for a 20" Faxon barrel as well as the group buy for the 6.5G Monster bolt. At $205 shipped for the barrel and $58 shipped for the bolt, it should provide for a quality rifle at an affordable price point.

This is the set up just before a night hunt...

Results...

Im gonna do some homework. nice setup. I wish we had hogs here. Coyotes are fun but some meat would be nice. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out.
