Arctic Snow Ghillie for all the winter white

So I have been providing encouragement to a kid on SnipersHide to finish his Snow Ghillie while folks keep telling him they are not practical for hunting in the snow and wont work and cant work and are bulky and heavy and flat out suck in the snow. Meanwhile I have been finishing up details on my own. I am well aware that it isn't for everyone and there are many pros and cons when using a Ghillie in the snow but I decided to go ahead with a build anyway. Id rather learn from experience. Better to be a hungry wolf than a content sheep.

Polyester Overwhite System from Cabelas is the base and I completely deconstructed it and sewed Waterproof MilSpec RipStop Nylon over the front of the jacket, and covered the entire pants, double layered on the knees and triple on the butt. Used an old golf net from the garage with 1.5" grid to stitch onto the back of the suit. Used 50% nylon and 50% cotton for the back material. The nylon keeps weight down, (whole suit is 3lb 11.8oz) while the cotton actually collects snow and ice to add as natural "vegetation". Details on the front of the suit are grey digital done with krylon and hand made stencils. A custom snow camo pattern is in the works and should be done in time for my next suit as this one is sold, pending funds.
I planned on using this to hunt deer in winter conditions as well as predators when the have the time. 2nd suit that i have in mind already has plenty of upgrades including reduced weight as well as being modular. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, JUST ASK.

Not as many prairie tests as I would like... unfortunately I hunt open prairie most often, but don't have much available where I live.

Good work! That looks really neat, when you get your second built you'll have to let us know how you like it and how it works on yotes (or deer). I have been thinking about building one with a touch of brown in it since we have more grass and other vegitation showing in Iowa typically so I would be interested to see how it works!

Man that suit looks awesome. Very professional. I built a regular ghillie that I really like, but said it is to time consuming. Now after seeing your snow ghillie it makes me want to build another one. Are you in the bottom 4 pictures or are they just pictures of the area you will be using the ghillie. If your in those pics, I honestly can't find you. Looks great.

yes i am in all the pictures...(it was -22 and my digital camera froze up) so they are screen shots from the video. Check out the video to see where i am at.
it is REDICULOUSLY time consuming...this one took probably 20-30 hours i'd bet and the next one will take longer because i am not attaching things to a prebuilt suit..im building it from scratch out of the nylon. entire suit will come in between 1-1.5 pounds total.
Fabric is relatively cheap i guess if you can find it. $5/yard. not as cheap as cotton stuff but way cheaper than 1000d codura
I always want to use it for deer hunting but we never seem to have much snow in mid november anymore. I might be using it to archery hunt this week so i will have the camera rolling if i do.
I hunt out in the prairie of western south dakota so i know what you mean about only having grass type stuff showing through the snow.
BTW, how are you enjoying all our snow? We got 18 inches 10 days ago but only have about 3 inches on the ground...40mph winds sent it all south east of us haha

lol yeah that was me...Marky Mark was just my acting double since i dont like the spotlight.

Looks good. I have been thinking about making a ghillie for winter. Out here though it is rarely pure white so a suit like that wouldn't work as well. You would have to work in some more color to blend with the sage sticking through the snow.

what might work out well for you was what someone else had suggested to me while making mine. take the batting out of some worn out pillows, or even just pick up some from walmart. and stuff it and tie it around a regular fall/prairie ghillie. not sure how your environment is, but even if there is only 50/50 snow to grass, an all white suit will look like a reglar old snow drift if you play the card right.
