Okay, so there are 10 fish. 2 die, 5 drown, 1 gets trapped in the filter, how many left?

stop counting you idiot. fish cant drown.

Actually, if a fish does not move or there is no current, it can drown. There is O2 in the water and the gills of a fish help deliver the O2 to the fishes body. So, if the fish cant move, or if there is no current, it can and will die. Thats why there are air pumps in fish tanks.......

No air pump in a regular goldfish or beta bowl? Why is it that they are able to live?

To continue my pendantic reputation, many fish do not rely on moving water and in fact the anabatoids (that's Siamese Fighting Fish to most of us) breathe surface air.

Useless information I know, but having a pet seems to be a human preference, and in Iraq I wasn't allowed to have anything else and had to learn about him in order to keep him alive.

I know sharks need to remain in constant motion or in a current, I rmemeber scuba diving in SE Asia and there was this one spot that had a strong channeled current and there would always be sharks hangin out there, scary at first. Does the one in the filter still count?

Ifin yall dont believe me then turn off your air pumps on your fresh and salt water tanks and see what happens to all those expencive fish.....gold fish and Betas SHOULD get their water changed every other day or so, that puts new o2 into the water. Dont change the water for a week or so and see how they do...holy cow.....call the feds, I made a statement that folks dont understand.....

These are some of the fish in our backyard fish pond...A few of them we've had for several years...A couple of the larger ones are five years old and about a foot long. They started out about four inches...

While I keep a pump pushing water through a water fall during the warm months, when winter sets in, I pull the pump and replace it with a stock tank heater to prevent the surface from freezing over and the fish survive at the bottom all Winter and keep growing, even though their systems go dormant as far as much movement... As long as ice doesn't trap plant decomposition gases on the water surface,,, They don't die...

Betas can live in rain puddles in a muddy depression, without active air flow...

Those Coy Fish are pretty hardy. Some fish are suited better for slow or stagnet water than others. Bass can live in a small pond and dont need a stream feeding the pond to breed. Brook Trout are the same way. Rainbow and Brown Trout as well as other species of fish need an inlet to spawn. So they are in running water or in a lake or pond that has a stream or river flowing in. They will face upstream so the current flows through their gills so they can breath without having to constantly move.....and not drown due to lack of 02. I kinda know what im talking about here but if yall want to poke fun at me, go ahead. Not you OT, its the other fellas that im talkin about. This is a humor forum so I apologize for hijacking this thread about how fish breath....sorry.

We got our grandson a small aquarium for his 2nd birthday. He is now 11 and the aquarium is still in our den. I can't tell you how many times we have had to buy new fish because the electricity went off for a few seconds and then back on. Every time the power outage stopped the little filter, and I didn't think about the goldfish until they were floaters. We started out with more expensive fish but wound up going with goldfish. I now keep a spare filter on hand because fish can drown.
