hey guys, i need some help, i have a gun an Arisaka rifle, that was switched out to 300 sav. the action is REALLLY long for the cartridge it could accept a 30-06, now to my question. i was thumbing through the midway catalogue, and found a timney trigger for the Arisaka rifle, and it has 2 options, one for the 7.7mm or the 6.5mm original, based on the action length can i find out which of the 2 triggers i would need?

this gun is a freakin tack driver, and it has the original trigger, and im thinkin how much better it would shoot if it wasnt set at 20 pounds.

anyway, thanks in advance for any help.

Jake,

Arisaka made the type 38 and type 99. Only type 38 was offered in 6.5mm and type 99 is an obvious close resemble of the Mauser action usually marked with chrysanthemum flower (mum) Japanese Imperial symbol on the top of the receiver, also there are narrow grooves cut in either side of the receiver for the slide cover.
You may try clip (or replace)the spring first, usually 2 coil is all you need.

i dont know what they are worth, i made a stock for mine, the only thing Arisaka on it, is the action. and i even had that worked on, the gun will shoot anything you feed through it under .5 inch. most of the time. LOL so i just want to get a new trigger for it.

Buzz, i'll check to see if any of those marking are on it. thanks for the info!

Brad,
I'm not a surplus rifle collector, so I don't have a clue what's worth. But I know the G.I. brought them home after the war and some used them to built hunting rifles, experts proclaim the earlier model is the strongest military bolt action of its era.
FWIW, I would hold on to it for it’s sentimental value but with the recent Japanese war movie (Iwojima sp??), war memorabilia collectors may be driving the price up (my assumption). In that case, if you want to sell it, this may be the time.

Jake,

I know only the Nagoya Arsenal(sp??) made they Type 99, their stamping is a larger circle around a number “8” without any other stamping near it, if that helps.

buzz, would this "8" be next to the serial number? this one does have an 8 on it in a circle that is just above the serial number. im trying to take a pic but my camera is acting intersting... BRB.

Jake,

It would be Obvious. If I remember correctly the "8" in the circle may even be up side down as you look at the serial numbers stright-up i.e a larger O is on the top of a small o.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif You got it! That's a type-99 (if no other stamping is near the circle 8).

I've only worked on type-99 in 7.7mm, I'm not aware they made it in any other caliber.

The stock is cracked a little

They were made with 2 pieces I think. Mine looks like that too. Lots of them do. Don't fix it.

You can get $500 for it fairly easy if you have it in full military garb, matching and with the Chrysanthemum intact. If it is already sporterized and especially already rechambered for a non-Japanese round its worth is merely as a shooter. I see quite a few floating around gun shows for around $100 to $150.
