Article on cleaning rimfires

Darn I need a couple of days to read all that. 45 pages of good information. I'll make a pot of coffee and get some snacks and read it a little bit at a time.

Which reminds me. I have a Ruger 10/22 that I shot a little bit after I cleaned it first. I only put about 10 rounds of the CCI stinger 22 LR ammo through it and then put it away without cleaning the thing. I got lazy. I need to clean that rifle.

hate when that happens.

Yep.I read it also but don't know where. A diet of stingers is supposed to beat up the bolt.
I doubt if a few now and then would be so bad.

I picket up a 10-22 heavy barrel target a while back. I read everything I could find about shooting little groups with it. Lot of stuff on RimfireCentral and other places.
I read the same thing about stingers in some of that stuff but I don't remember where.
Where ever it was they were saying stingers would beat up the bold in the back where it hits the bolt stop pin.
I have shot a few stingers and you can notice a different sound from the bolt. A friend had some sort of soft plastic like bolt stop pins and put one in my rifle and that stopped the noise. I don't know how long that would hold up though.
Maybe it's only the target model?

The nylon bolt stop pin will stop the bolt from being beat up. I don't shoot high velocity rounds in mine, but both of mine have the nylon bolt stops.

Great cleaning article Ackleyman.

Lilja barrels has instructions for cleaning their barrels on their website under relevant links. If you read it most quality rimfire barrels need very little cleaning when using lead bullets. When I shot a lot I only cleaned them when the accuracy fell off. Pushed a patch or two through it and it was good to go.

the issue with stingers vs other standard 22lr is case length.

the casing on a singer is longer than that on a regular 22lr, but with the same OAL - which on a standard 22lr chamber is usually ok as there is enough free-bore before the rifling to accommodate it.

on match style chambers (like a bentz, etc), the extra case length can jam into the lands, damaging them, as well as possibly causing a bit of a pressure spike and/or a stuck case in your chamber. repeated firing will of course make the lands damage worse and potentially effect overall accuracy of the firearm with any ammo. in general its just a no-bueno situation.

here s a pic from the web showing the difference in the case vs oal

on some firearms the extra gusto may also cause other issues like bolt bounce, etc and as noted in a 10/22 a poly recoil buffer can take some of that out.

the important takeaway is a throwback to standard firearm safety - KNOW YOUR FIREARM and only use ammo suitable for it. in this case if/when in doubt - dont put stingers in your 22lr.

im sure a quick call to the manufacturer with the SN will allow you to determine if stingers are safe for the chamber in your 22lr rifle.

if you're looking for some 22lr with a little extra zip with less risk, cci's Velociter ammo has "normal" 22lr case length dimensions and should be chamber safe for all 22lr.

here's a list from PTG showing the different dimensions on the varying chambers that *May* be used.

again referencing various web stuff, the case length on a stinger is 0.702"
