3rd stand of Wednesday night. Saw a skunk on #1. Decided after this stand to try the next county North of mine. Saw a red fox on #2. Walked out the ridge about 800yds from #2 to the next pasture herding the cows and calves as I went. This is a steep W/E ridge and I had a slight W wind. Set the call about 60yds W of me and started with a den raid and within seconds I get flashes of green then another coming up the hill FAST. Drop the scanner (it is on a lanyard) and into the gun. Gotta move the tripod cause I have it set up for my down wind quarter because that is the 'close encounter shot". Vid shows what happens to #1 at 65yd. and a buddy. #2 and a buddy shows up at 105yd and vid shows and hit and a MISS
Nice seeing coyotes on a stand
Now to today (Friday). As I am watching Alf's video, the neighbor texts saying 'dogs are howling to a siren in town somewhere behind Pete's'. I finish chores and head there at about 1:00. Not knowing exactly where to be I go to the 'chocolate drop' (what I call the high knobs of a ridge-kinda looks like a Hershey Kiss) behind Pete's and hit a siren at mid volume--wholly chit Lisbeth, I am right on top of em. Can't see 10 ft here and easy for them to downwind me so I back track about 120-150 and get on their level. I can only see maybe 15yds here but that is the way this woods is. I set the call 10yds downhill from me and get hunkered against a tree. Hit a pup howl sequence. Nothing. Wait about a minute then I howl 2-3 times and all hell breaks loose in front and above me AND close. I pick up movement at 15-20yds., but it is behind a 6" tree apparently shaking it head (flies?). It disappears then reappears at about 12yds and BANG. adult male 2:05pm. No other takers after 15min. If there are 3 pics in this post the day kill is the one with the 870 against the fence.
