ATN scope

Couple of questions. I have an A2 Bushy that I would like to put night vision on.

First with the night vision being a 4 power will it through my POI off if my head is perferct every time. I have a red dot on there now. If it changes every time I will just have to buy a new upper.

Second Looking at buying the ATN MK390, will I be able to identify a coyote from a dog at 200 yards? Or do I need to step up to a gen 3. We don't have any of these around in the stores, hate to brop the money and not be happy.

Thank in advance!

You won't be happy with the perfomance of the Gen I stuff, even with an IR spotlight (which is mandatory with any Gen I scope, in my opinion).

If you will be hunting away from the city, where there is no "city glow" or "sky glow", and you are out in the country, you can forget about seeing even 10 feet with a Gen I scope, without supplemental IR light.

Even my Gen III PVS-14 has trouble seeing on a moonless, semi-cloudy night with the 3x lens on it! I can see a coyote at about 350 yards with it, but you won't be able to make out much detail. At about 200 yards you would be able to see whether it was a coyote or a dog, althought I have found that their gate and stride differ greatly. The dog kind of walks along, the coyote kind of bounces too-and-fro.

I would invest in a nice spotlight with a red filter and a daytime scope before I would go the Gen I route. Gen III is prety much the only really usable unit that you will get your money's worth with on a dark night.

Hope this helps!

Iownthenight,
Thanks for the info. I kinda thought that I needed to go Gen3 or go home! I have been night hunting for a few years now and set up as far as shooing lights and spotlights. I was just thinking of taking it to the next level. But that is a little now of a jump than what I would like to take.

Thank you again.

I'll have to say "ditto" on what IOTN saya, cougerbait. Gen 1 will get you maybe 50 yds with a decent illuminator, and then only in a narrow field of view. You can get good results with a headgear mounted Gen 3 monocle and the right red-dot scope, it does not change the POI. If you'll email me I can give you a lot more detailed info. timbermanxx@direcway.com (take out the x's)

OK what do you guy's think about the GEN 2 stuff? I am still waiting on my mk6900 that I ordered from Opticsplus.net, bought it last Thursday and paid over night shipping and it still has not arrived. I am considering refusing it because my intent was to get a gen 3, he talked me into the gen 2 did I make a mistake here? also still wondering if it will get here!

Thanks

BTW Don't buy from him, I have sent 3 e-mails trying to get a tracking number and still no reply. If it does not show up tomorrow I will be calling my credit card company.

Still no reply on e-mails and no phone calls back, he must have caller ID because he was going to call me with tracking info and never returned my call. Now all I ever get is a recorded message, called credit card company and they gladly refunded the money, I bet he calls me on this now! This shows that paying by credit card can help you when you get ripped off!

Still no scope today, I never heard from opticsplus.net, Surprised because my credit card co. Refunded my money, won't he be surprised when his statement arrives. Do not order from this guy! Pass it on to folks looking to buy night vision stuff. I am now in the market again, but I am going to be very careful on a 2000.00 dollar order!

Elk, I purchased a Aries MK440 from ATN. I got it from Opticsplus.net Steve was the person I spoke with. I had absolutely no problems with my transaction. They provided me with a tracking number and it was delivered in 3 days. I would recommend him.

Elkeholic,

He probably talked you into a Gen II scope because that was what he had in stock to sell you (probably no Gen III units in stock!) With the war going on overseas, most Gen III tubes are going to the military before they can ever be assembled into commercial units. That is the current situation.

Also, no more Raptor or Nighthawk sales to civilians is what I have heard now. The backlog on these mil scopes have exceeded all expectation, so all the NV guys have basically decided to not sell to the civilian market any longer, especially for weapons scopes. This really sucks for the normal civilian, as drives up the price of any scopes out there in civilian hands.

I would send the Gen II scope back, it will look fine in town, but will be non-performing when you get out of town and out in the country!!!! Not worth it!!

Get a Gen III scope, it is the only thing that will perform on any given night!

Just my $0.02!
