ATN Thor 640x480 2.5 'washout'

I am getting a bright washout with my ATN.

Mostly when in a seated position and looking towards the horizon is when I get it most. If I am sitting on a small hill and looking down into the valley it is great!

Any suggestions??

Thank you!

Thats pretty normal with most thermals when you look at the sky and the horizon together. Don't know the fancy word for what its called but I've seen it with tons of different units.

This, the sky is -50 and the land isn't, try looking at one or the other but not both.

Put the unit in manual mode and set upper and lower temp limits

Oh wait ATN has setup the unit to perform the best automatically for you, so you don't need a manual mode. Here is the problem, ROI (region of interest) is full screen and based on the view the firmware is setting the auto gain too high and causing washout.
I am not sure if you have any built in preset settings that change the ROI like some other thermals.
Only other way I can think of will be to make a lens cap that cuts out the upper part of the screen to block the cold sky (-50 from skypups post) causing the auto gain to be raised by the firmware.

On the flir scout units I would expose a little of my finger(heat) into the view to force the firmware to readjust the gain to give me a better image and could make the image brighter or darker so the critters could not hide.

I've seen this a lot also. Skypup is correct if you look more towards the ground say 1/3 of the FOV horizon, and the lower 2/3rds the ground, it will help to an extent... I've noticed with the IRD equipment, this doesn't happen hardly at all.

I have an IRPATROL M250 and never have this issue whether looking at the sky or horizon!

I think they applied a little common sense like you are probably not looking at temps -50 so no need to adjust for a lower temp that cold. Computers are only as smart as the software that runs them. I wish a manual mode would be added, the atn unit for sub $2k for close in targets looks nice. But I worry about the auto settings atn has programmed causing less then optimal viewing. If a manual mode was added they would get my $2k plus probably others $$$ when Picts are posted showing scenes that look much better when the settings are set for the ambient temps the user is hunting in. It's hard to try and automatically adjust for all possibilities so compromises are made.

Automatic gain control can usually be adjusted to be specific to various portions of the image screen.

For instance, on the FLIR RS scopes you can choose which portion/percentage of the screen to adjust AGC to by selecting S1, S2, S3 for center of screen, entire screen or lower quadrant of screen to prevent that from happening.

For most of my TWS I prefere AGC since I just turn them on and shoot and turn them off.
