ATV Shotgun Security Carrier w/Pics

One of the main reasons for not carrying a shotgun with me on most hunts is my concern for security if I choose not use the shotgun on a particular stand while hunting with my ATV. Here's the story.

I hunt predators 90% of the time on Private Property. When I want to also include my shotgun, it's no big deal, I just place it on the gun rack and leave it there if I do not wish to pack the shotgun on a particular hunt. That's not the case when I hunt on Public Land. I wouldn't even consider leaving my shotgun unattended while I am off squealing like a rabbit on some BLM parcel. (You know what I wouldn't find upon my return!)

Here's how I solved the problem. While browsing through a local sporting goods store here in Portland, I found a Fishing Rod Case by Plano which absolutely solved the problem If you take a look at the pictures I added at the end of this post, you can see that the shotgun slides perectly into the case, is strapped to the rear of my Honda ATV, and has a place to lock the end from sliding out. A simple addition of a lock to secure the case to the ATV and I have a nearly "theft proof" storage spot for my great new shotgun.

Hope this proves to be helpful to anyone who might be having the same problem.

With Rustydogs permission, I wanted to add to the thread on how I put secure storage on my Rhino.
Here is the back of the Rhino. I cut 3/4" plywood the exact shape of the box. I removed the plastic factory fasteners and screwed the plywood down using the original holes, but used large metal screws. I added side boards all the way around just for added security of cargo that sits on top of the box cover. You can barely see the hasp on the back deck, just above the "M" and "A" in Yamaha.

The back side board was placed 2-3 inches from the back so I would have a place to add the hasp and lock. Drill a 1/4" hole as far from the edge of the plywood as you can and still hit the metal top of the tailgate. This is best done after everything is installed and you just drill from the top down, drilling both in one shot. In the picture it looks like the hole is in the middle, but that's the darkness inside the box you see. The hole is actually very close to the edge of the metal.

Here is a shot with the pin in place. It penatrates the plywood and goes into the metal tailgate.

Lastly, a shot of the hasp closed and the lock in place. Even if they undo the two tailgate closures, they can't get into the box without major effort.

I hope some of you find this information useful.
Thanks.

The enclosed box is a good idea. I've been useing just a metal box you bolt down into the ATV bed.. For guns i just use my Koplin gun scaboards, they have a hole in them for a locking pin or lock..

As far as the shotgun storage/locking on the ATV...

You could've done the same thing using a Kolpin Gun Boot.
The 1st couple years I called, I was using my Grandpa's Yamaha ATV to get around larger tracts of land, instead of walking.
And I carried both a rifle & shotgun.
I installed 2 Gun Boots. One on each side of the rear rack.
Each had it's own padlock.
Granted, if someone had wanted to unbolt the mounting brackets & take the whole asembly they could have. But it would have been too time consuming & difficult for most thieves.
