Axis or 110 Savage!

I've decided to buy my son a rifle so he won't keep bumming mine while we are coyote hunting together.

I see the Axis is cheaper and from what I've learned the action isn't as robust as compared to the Model 110.

Any advice on these two guns would be appreciated. I plan to go with 223 so I can reload for him too.

I'll be that guy and tell you to buy a Tikka instead.
Or a Ruger American Gen 2 Predator. -- Those things seem to shoot way better than their price tag would suggest.
I'm not a "Savage hater". I have 2 of them, but one of them has been plagued with the (seemingly standard) Savage ejection issues. For the money, those Rugers are hard to beat.

The 110 is a long action and weighs more than the Axis.
A bigger dia extractor detent ball ends the savage extraction issues.
I've had an Axis right hand .223 loaner rifle since they came out and it's been reliable and given me no issues.

I have 6 older 10.short action and like the looks better than the axis. I won the Egg Shoot with one of them with after market stock, barrel and trigger. I've been playing with the Savage 10 action since 2000.,

Good luck on your choice, right now I'm enamored with the Howa Mini's, I like their short actions and choice of 6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel l, I have one of each. Nice compact rifle with out having to pay Sako or CZ premium prices.

Ya, if this were a gun for myself I wouldn't scrimp at all but since he's a "casual" hunter I figure the 110 Predator is a good gun for him. I have a B&L 6x24 to go on top of it.

All my rifles are Savage. I build them from scratch. I don't own an AXIS because I don't like the recoil lug design. Some that own them give them praise. An over looked model is the Trail Hunter I bought one for around $400 new last year it is a model 10/110 design I bought it for the action, very well designed gun with the top bolt release. It also comes with a Houge stock That some folks like. I'm not sure if it comes in .223 but it is the best value Savage out there. I sold the barrel and stock and ended up with the action for $50 I got it from Academy sports. I just checked they make it in .223

I have had a lot of Savage's.
I would go with the 110. In 223 it is a short action, the Tikka is a long action.
It is more robust and a very smooth action. I have a 110 Hunter with skinny barrel that shoots well under moa. The Savage is a 1:9 twist, both 110 and Axis as they use the same barrels for both.
Also look at the Ruger Predator, Awesome rifles. Same price range or a bit cheaper.
If you need load data, Pm me as I have worked up several loads from 40 to 69gr.
