AZ Gray Fox #1

This afternoon Andrew (hunting partner) and I went hunting North of Florence, AZ in a large wash (75' wide). I sat on one side and Andrew on the other. My Foxpro FX5 sat in a bush in the middle of the wash. Foxpro began calling using a jackrabbit in distress sound at about level 20 and not 3 minutes into the calling sequence Andrew shoots his gun. I look down the wash 100 yards and see nothing he's could shoot at. 7 second later he shoots again. I still haven't the slightest clue what he was shooting at. I see no dust, no movement, nothing. I wait a bit longer and finally stand up and say,

"What the heck you shooting at?"

He says, "I killed it."

"Killed what?"

"It's right over here. Hey, look it's a fox."

He apparently shot, missed barely, and then shot it on the run as it was running towards where I was sitting. The fox was no more than 25' to my left and I never knew it. Andrew saw it poke it's head over the ridge and then it ran out into the open to the FX5. I was concentrating way down the wash. Good lesson learned- A) watch close by the call and B) Put Andrew in front of you so he doesn't get the shot before you do.

Shot with a Remington 700 .223 caliber. Look at the length of that tail!

Jim this was just off the main dirt road by the canal with the bobcat tracks on the North side up one of the washes.

I honestly didnt know what it was when I shot it. How is that for hunting safety?

I guessed it was a small coyote or a baby mountain lion that was also anorexic and suffering from HIV.

Thats why when we walked up Scott kept asking me "what you shoot?" and I just kept saying "I killed it". Haha I knew I hit it, but until I walked up on it I still didnt know what.

Could have been Arizona's only Lemur for all I knew.

I nominate Kodiak for funniest post of the month..

Great job guys.

Thanks man, I shot this thing about 3 miles from Florence State Prison. So just incase this fox was affiliated with any gangs, I took my "posed" pick flashing gang signs.

Scott has pics.
