AZ Mountain Lion: Aftermath

For those of you that may have already heard, I got a mountain lion yesterday. Unfortunatly I did it unlawfully. I used a shotgun with #4 buckshot. I did not know that you could only use a slug in a shotgun, else I wouldn't have shot the lion. I had both a rifle and shotgun in the truck that day, on that particular stand, it was the shotgun's turn.

I pride myself on being an ethical hunter, and those of you that have read my posts and hunted with me over the years; I hope you would agree.

After I shot the lion, I called fish and game to find out how to report (mandatory call in) that I had gotten a lion (I had a valid tag, and in season).

Once I posted my pictures online with the write up, I recieved several PM's (thanks to those people BTW) telling me that I couldn't shoot a mountain lion with a shotgun unless using a slug. I checked the regulations and upon finding out that I unlawfully killed the lion. I immediately called Arizona Fish and Game to report myself.

The person on the phone had an officer call me that night and I arranged to bring the lion in the next day.
I was not cited or fined by the officer, as I called in the incident myself, but I was not allowed to keep the lion. I offered to have the lion mounted so it doesn't go to waste (and still not keep it) but I was told that it would go up for auction.

A few important lessons to be learnt:
1) If you have time to buy the tag, take the time to read the regulations
2) If you make a mistake, acknowledge it and own up to your mistake. AZ F&G took this into account and I believe it was the reason I was wasn't issued a citation.

Yesterday was a great day and bad day all at the same time. To give you an idea of how elated I was after getting the lion, the first person I called was my dad to tell him about it. Later that night I had to call him back and tell him that it was taken unlawfully. Nothing in this world compares to the disappointment in a parents voice.

I post this information in the hopes that others will learn from it, people can forgive me, and so that I can move on with predator hunting.

WTG! It's not always easy to do what it right , but it is always right. Thank you for being a stand up outdoorsman and person.

That was a very honarable thing to do, you are a great sportsman, admitting your mistake.

Keep up the hard work,
Gabe

I realize that it must have been a tough call to make, but my hat is off to you for being a great sportsman and an ethical human being

I have been reading your posts for a year or so and think i have a feel for your character. Move on, "You're a Great American". And congratulations!!!!

all men make mistakes it take a big man to admitt it.
you gained respect not lost from me.
congratulations on doing the right thing.
now go find a lion with your rifle. a new lion mount would be well deserved for being a good man.

Andy, integrity and character are measured when no one's looking. By doing the right thing, you ethically elevate our hunting activity. It takes a big man to admit their mistake.

Congratulations. Hopefully your incident and your lessons learned will be an example to others.

I'd be glad to hunt with a man of your stature ANY DAY!!! If more people in this world would do the same, IE: ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY, we wouldn't be in half the mess we are in today.

I salute you!

In my book integrity is the real true measure of a man. That had to be a hard thing to do for a multitude of reasons.

My hat is off to you and I echo everyone's comments above.

When I teach Hunter Ethics in my Hunter Ed classes--you personify the definition I use for ethics--'it's what you do when no one else is watching'!

Good Luck and don't beat yourself up about it--you did the right thing! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Tim

You done good. There were several diifferent directions you could have taken this....You unselfishly chose the most honorable. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

It takes a good man to do what you did.
I'd hunt with you any day!

Now, Go get another one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've been following your posts for awhile and I know you really wanted that lion. Talk about a buzzkill, I'm sure it was hard to give up but it could be worse I guess. It was a learning experience for me as well, always read the regs. I know I would have made the same mistake. Anyway keep at it I'm sure you'll bag another one. Besides, next year is almost here!
