AZ Mountain Lion: Aftermath

Andy - I'd hunt with you again my friend. It's easy to miss that part of the lion hunting reg's. Lions are big game and ig game can't be taken with a shotgun shooting shot, an easy one to miss for sure.

Andy, that's a bummer you didn't get to keep it. However it sure says alot about you the way you handled the situation. Everyone makes mistakes. Yours was an innocent one. Your honesty is rare thing these days and should be commended. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'm sure as hard as you hunt, there will be another longtail in your future.

Good hunting

Well done.
The Lord knows what happened.
You've said your piece.
He foregives and that's all that should matter.
Now go out there and get another.
Mike

that was truly honorable, however i'm a bit dissappointed in the conservation officer for not letting you keep the lion.

Boy am I gonna become unpopular for this, but I'm going to take a different stance on this issue.

Andy handled this the right way. What else could he have done after pasting it all over the internet? It was a mistake no doubt, but what makes it innocent? Uninformed or uneducated would better describe what happened. If Joe Blow draws a mule deer tag and goes out and drops a doe or an elk, is that an innocent mistake because he couldn't tell the difference. What about the guy who shoots the wrong species of deer? Innocent mistake? Should either of those guys get to keep what they harvested or get off without writing a check?

As sportsmen, it's our resposibility, our obligation, to know what we are doing when we take to the field. He should have known better and that's the bottom line. There's really no excuse, zero, for not knowing and fully understanding the regulations regarding whatever type of hunting you participate in.

If Andy was new to AZ predator calling or even a casual type caller, it would be a little more understandable, but not forgivable. I'm not getting on Andy's case (it wouldn't make any difference to me who it was), we all make mistakes, but all these atta boy replies are getting under my skin just a little. It was a violation and a stupid violation at that. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

OK, I'm tied to the stake. Let the flames begin.

I don't see you getting flamed, Jim....

What Andy did was a simple mistake. He discovered that mistake & called G&F himself to take his licks.

That showed that he was doing the right thing.

BUT, he didn't hide from it here either. He came in here & admitted his mistake & told us what it cost him....his lion, which was I assume the most valued trophy he had gotten to date.
When he addressed his issue here in the open forum, that showed his character....

Too many times it's way too easy to Monday morning quarterback.
He made no excuses & took his due & represented our sport in the best possible way under the circumstances. That's why I'm proud that he's a member here, not that he made a mistake. We all do.

Barry

Wish we had more hunters like you in my area. I envy your character and judgement and wish more people never mind hunters were like you.

The real trophy here is keeping your integrity and doing what you knew and felt was right without selling out yourself for a hunt that mistakenly sucessful. I would have been very proud as a parent of my childs decision if found in your predicament. Hold your head high and go get em.

I hope things go well with Andy, but I have to imagine that Arizona G & F isn't finished with him yet. Just because he wasn't immediately issued a citation doesn't mean one isn't coming down the turnpike. Some violations take awhile for the G & F to ponder and act upon.

Sounds like he is taking it like a man, regardless of outcome. I wish Andy luck!

If it were me, when it comes up for sale at the auction, buy it back.

I gotta wonder about a law like that also? What is it's purpose? What does it stop from happening? You can shoot a lion with a slug, but not buckshot? It almost rings of that BS no Sunday hunting law in some of the eastern states.

Some laws are simply intended for another reason, but they catch the non-target hunter. In Idaho we have a very idiotic law that makes e-calls illegal for hunting bears and lions. But we can use hounds, bait, and spot/stalk with long seasons and multiple tags...

We used to have a really silly fall bear season a few years ago. I personally knew a very law abiding hunter who got caught by the asinine season. Then one fall a state representative got nailed and by the the next year the season was changed. Funny how when someone of importance got pinched it changed [beeep] fast.

Oatsayo AZ,
That is indeed a very honorable thing to do. Im sure it was hard and scarey. But you definetely did the right thing. Makes us all proud. It may seem like a small thing, But its not. Honesty is rewarded.

It ia a good thing you do not live in Colorado. I made a mistake and called it in right away, and I did everything just the way they told me to do , It cost me $650.00 and they suspended me for 1 year. They said doing what they told me to do did not matter because it didn't match the regulations.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Andy...

We all make mistakes, but few have the self respect to respond as you did. Thanks for making the aftermath public and putting the bar of honesty back where it belongs. I believe another fine cat will be yours in the future.

Andy: You did the stand up thing, and what's even better--you are sharing your mistake with others, which will serve as a reminder to all of us to stay educated on the rules & regs. We ALL make mistakes occasionally, its the exceptional few that can admit and share their mistakes!
Now you just need to get the auction schedule from the F&G so you can go back & bid on your cat. I've been to a few auctions in MT where animals sold for surprisingly low!

You are a true sportsman and a gentleman,we all make a mistake now and then and I am sure that you will not make that one again nor will any one hunting with you.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..
