Well... good show for doing the right thing in the end. It is a shame the entire situation ended up the way it did. But it could have been worse.

You know, reading one particular post reminds me of another old saying... "If you don't have anything good to say, say nothing."
 
I guess I should keep quiet but just can't. What's up Jim? A guy makes a mistake, publicly asks for forgiveness and gives up his lion and you've got the nerve to kick him in the groin?

I guarantee the G&F isn't done but even if they are I don't know what else Andy could do, I guess memorize the regs. Not likely for any of us. Truth is the rancher thanks him, the deer hunters thank him and I thank him for taking one more lion out of the woods. I'm sorry he had to give the trophy up and would gladly chip in on the auction to help him get it back.

I'm not a lion hater, in fact I've treed quite a few and only shot one. That said I live in country where it snows and any lion crossing a road on fresh snow is killed. Down in the desert very few lions are killed with hounds and even less are called in and killed. Truth is we need more harvest in the desert areas in my opinion.

Andy's pain will be long-lived and the last thing he needs is a beating from his online family.

Regs can be confusing. I once read ours in Ok and still didn't understand a particuliar section. Then I called a local game warden and he give me an answer but I could tell by the way he answered he wasn't really for sure of the law. I called another and got a totally different answer but this warden had the facts to back up the law. So with all that said don't beat yourself up and what Jimenaz said is a bunch of bull and he must be a politican.

some regs may be confusing to some people but when they say.

Don't shoot mountain lions with a shot gun and shot. How is that confusing? It is up to everyone hunting to know the laws about what they are hunting.

I guess I am a little surprised with you too Jim. Andy has received the atta boy responses from many of us because of his integrity and character as a man. Not too many of us would disagree with your assesment that Andy should have known better. It was a preventable error no doubt but an error just the same. There was no intent on his part. Trust me when I say that intent, or the lack thereof, has much to do with the level of criminality of any given act.

Andy made a mistake and because of his high moral character, he chose to own up to his mistake before God and man. My hat is off to you Andy. You did something that a high percentage of people would not have done. Dont ask me how I know but most just lay low and wait to see if they get hit by the fall out. I would share a camp with you any day Andy.
 
You can hunt with me anytime and if we get a loin coming to the call you get the first shot. I hoop you got to keep the pictures you took.
 
You know, when it comes to Predator Masters I usually subscribe to what GC said about saying nothing at all. This time for whatever reason, I was compelled to write what I did and I stand by it. It was not my intention to step on Andy's throat. It could have been anybody, heck insert my name into what I wrote and I wouldn't change anything.

My point was, and is, know the rules of the game you play. If you can't be bothered to educate yourself with the rules, don't play...period. Not playing by the rules just opens the door for more rules to be made. Andy said it all with this:

Jim spoke his opinion, in a non threatening and non abusive way, on a forum board that is comprised mainly of opinions. He did not bash Andy. He made a valid point of backing up Andy in respect to knowing the regs. If we all agreed on everything, we would have nothing to discuss here.

Carry on but lets not bash Jim either in the process.


Andy I am sorry to hear of your ordeal. Congrats on calling in the lion.
 
Andy although I have never met you, your character says a lot about you. As hard as it was, I am willing to give you an atta boy.
 
Wow that would be tough.You did the right thing but I might as well be honest,In a situation like that I wouldnt have.Laws like that they should definately change.The critters arent worried about if its a slug passing through their body or a load of buckshot.But thats how it is and now you know.I just wish they would have handled it differently than taking the critter you killed.A $10 fine and a warning would be about right.Now if you would have killed it out of season or something,then thats when taking your critter away from you would be the right punishment.But over a bunch of peices of a lead VS. one solid piece of lead?Give me a break. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
It was an honest mistake and calling yourself in was proof of that.That mountain lion was yours fair and square.
Anyone could make a mistake like that.
 
Andy you did the right thing and I commend you for it, that would be a hard thing to do for any of us. Of course I've gotta say, man you should've read the regs and then you might have a lion!
 
My problem is that he killed it with a Shotgun at very close range. Who hides in the bushes sounding like lunch and kills a mountain Lion coming in to eat with a Shotgun? I think it was self defense.

You that are putting him down need to remember these laws are not written by Hunters, they are written by Lawyers that have most likely never hunted and most times are hard to read and understand.
