Bad press for hunters (Ted Nugent)

I sure hope he does !!

Good debate to wade in on. It caught my eye because I have not been a fan of Ted's stemming back to an incident in Texas in the 80's. He has slowly been winning me over though because he seems to have cleaned up his act (language) some and increasingly has spoken with logic, common sense, passion and control. I have seen him in various panel discussions turn the anti's inside out and upside down. I too would characterize him as an in your face kind of guy which, used at the right time in the right way, can be a positive. It is not my style though.

Having been involved in a number of video productions I can say with some measure of confidence that he should know the bottom line is that he ultimately is responsible for knowing the laws. He should be given the chance to explain and defend himself. That said, I will somewhat come to his defense.

It is easy for this to happen unknowingly if you rely on others too much. I seriously doubt he went into the filming with the intention to break the laws. I am confident with his longtime involvement in video productions, he knows of the problems other high profile TV personalities have had with similar situations and would be determined not to have his reputation damaged similarly by doing that knowingly.

I have been close to situations like this in our productions. It actually happened most recently in the reverse. We blew an opportunity to take a good Bobcat on film because we assumed the laws were the same as the last time we were in that state 2 years earlier. The law had changed the year before. Bottom line...we did not know the law.

The Outfitter should have been all over this situation about using bait. I won't pass judgment on the Outfitter though without hearing his side of the story. I would like to know what kind of involvement the Sponsor may have had. Did they set the opportunity up for the both of them?

Lots of unknowns here, so try not to be to harsh or protective until we know the whole story. I am disappointed that it happened but as with so many other things, it may not be what it appears on the surface. I will give him the benefit of the doubt until I know more.

Uncle Ted's apology:

To my Fellow Outdoorsmen.... You may have read the news that I pled no contest to two misdemeanor game violations. I should have been better informed, more aware and I take full responsibility. The honorable hunting lifestyle is my deepest passion.
-Ted Nugent

That's EXACTLY how you handle it. He manned up, accepted the blame. No finger-pointing, blaming the outfitter, blaming the legal system. He's saying "Hey, I should've known better." Also, he directed his apology to the appropriate group: the hunters and outdoorsmen he educates, represents and defends.

THAT is integrity and THAT is why Uncle Ted is one of my heros!!

I really don't care for Ted. There is just something about him that gets on my nerves.

That being said. Who gives a rats rear end. Every time you plant a food plot you bait deer. Spikes can be any age and if I paid an outfitter to shoot a spike that better be a real cheap hunt. I would rather kill a doe.

Ted lost none of my respect from this incident. Screw California and all their weirdos that live there.

PETA always take the "in your face" approach. It has worked for them.

Uncle Ted gave a sincere apology to the right audience. Anything more public would cause the story to live longer than it should (too late btw). Nothing good would come from a more public announcement.

Ted Nugent is a very public figure and has been for nearly 40 years. If someone followed one of us around for 40 years recording everything we say/do do you think something would be found that the anti's could use? Probably. And the references to the scum sucking Dems like Charlie Rangel are spot on -- they have broken laws deliberately for years and believe they are above the law.

With hunting laws changing year to year and varying by state (particularly baiting for deer and shooting spike bucks) it is easy to see why someone might make the small mistake he made. The punishment given is about right.

Ted's views on hunting and the second ammendment are very likely identical to most hunters. He expresses them very differently than many hunters. I would say on balance he has been quite effective. His point should never have been (nor should ours ever be) to win over the hearts and minds of everyone (check the box there for Ted). Winning over PETA morons is impossible. Their views are perverse and extreme. They prey on Disney views of wildlife and other fantasies. They are, unfortunately, very well funded.

The world needs a Ted Nugent. We hunters need a Ted Nugent. Ted is the personification of "DON'T TREAD ON ME". What could be more American than that?

Uncle Ted said he made a mistake, so what, we have all made mistakes some have been caught, some not. We all learn from these mistakes and move on. PETA can kiss my back side, Ted is good for our sport and for gun rights. There is my $.02 cents on the matter. GOOD HUNTING this upcoming season.....----Riflemann

When the economy tanks to a point where liberals and like minded members of PETA are going hungry, I hope that I'm provided an opportunity to see some of them forced to pick up a gun and kill their own food. Let's see how strong they're convictions are when they're starving. I'm willing to bet that the same people they are harassing now, will be the same ones they run to for "protection" and "stability" in the hard times ahead. Just my .02 cents.

Ted made a mistake. I'm OK with the point restriction but the rest of that is just stupid Calf laws. Ted is great for the sport!!! Ted for NRA President!!! Brent

If we as hunters try to do the right thing, and succeed for the most part, it still won't be enough to make anti-hunting groups back off. Ted Nugent and every one else out there is human & will make mistakes. Will the media make a stink about it because it's Ted Nugent, of course. If the media doesn't have famous people to use, will they back off hunters and hunting? Everyboby that believes that raise your hand. Animal rights activists will use what they have and simply make up the rest. It is easy to do, because kids grow up watching an endless parade of movies, and reading books that show cruel hunters killing Bambi, and all the harmless, tame little woodland creatures. When do you see movies that show the chicken get it's head chopped off & then plucked & fried up for dinner? How many kids know there are slaughter houses killing & processing beef, pork, etc. to send to the gracery store for Mom to buy & cook for dinner? Very Few! In this day & time most kids think food comes from the grocery store. Where does the store get it? A blank stare or a shrug of their shoulders is your answer. Too many people don't understand hunting anymore. They don't & won't even consider eating wild game. Eeewwww! It has that "wild" taste. Our non-hunting society is molding & training the public to view hunting as nothing more than cruelty and abuse of animals. In the end all I can say is, we'd better hope & pray this country is never faced with another great depression. If we are there's gonna' be a whole lot of folks wishing they could go out & kill something to feed themselves & their families.(And the last thing on their mind will be game laws & limitations!)-----Ben Jimmy

And that was the point of some of Ted's episodes of his reality series. Get some veggie tree hugger out in the woods for 78 hours with no food. Then give them the chance at protein except it doesn't come in a plastic bag at the grocery. What do they do? Every time they kill the .....fill in the blank.

That Alaska Experiment TV program was good for that concept too. They had some who were self labeled "non supportive of hunting...don't believe in it" people. Then they got hungry and there was no drive through, no vegan depot. The best small game hunter on one season was a "anti hunter". Too d#$% funny. Get hungry and what happens? We revert to what is natural.

Finally, that series Survivor has also been great. Starve for a few weeks and see how your convictions regarding protein sources adapts. Those people were chasing those chickens with sticks and nets. Outstanding!

Hail to Uncle Ted whether you like him or not. He puts the fish on the table (reference to the fact that to have a great dinner of fish, somebody had to pick up the mess and cut it up on the table....i.e., put the ugly ignored facts our there in order to get to a better place.)

I've always liked Uncle Ted and he did apologize so that's that as far as I'm concerned. He's been a great advocate for hunting and the 2nd Amendment. This didn't change my opinion about him at all.......

+1..Nugent was the first Concert I ever went to...1979 always a fan of his music.A good friend of mine however had some business dealings with him and said he was the most arrogant prick he ever met.I never been to fond of folks like that.

While some are on their soapbox, why not go ahead and confess your own screw-ups. Never took a fish that was the wrong size by just a hair? Never killed over your limit of ducks, squirrels, turkeys? Do you ever get in your car & go a bit faster than all the speed LIMIT signs? Never hunted(or shot) a nice buck that was just a few steps over your lease line. How many times have you "looked the other way" for your buddy? Worse yet, did the dreaded GROUND SHRINKAGE happen to that big buck you shot, while you were tracking him? Then when you walk up on him, you realize it's not only not as big as you thought it was, it's not LEGAL? Do you take a chance and bring him out, or just walk away so you don't get caught with it? The point is, none of us follow all the rules all the time. Throw only as big a rock at Ted, as you want thrown at you. Good hunting & good luck.-----Ben Jimmy

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. Well said daddyflea!

If I had to have someone stand up for me & other Hunters, I choose Ted Nugent. Yes, he made a mistake, but he has apologized for his mistake. I know the folks out there that hate us hunters will take this & get as much out of it as they can, but Ted has been a strong advocate of the sport & I'm sure with all the things going on to make a show, that things can be missed from time to time. I'm sure Ted is not in charge of looking up regs and such when he does a show. Someone let this slip through the cracks.

If I was lucky enough to be able to have a show and hunt like Ted does there would be no way or no one I would trust to have read the regulations except me. I would not want to trust my hunting privileges to some moron outfitter (no not all just some) or staff member. Like many of you have said he did not do this on purpose but as the saying goes ignorance is no excuse. With that said lets all be smart ethical hunters read the regs for our hunting area and get clarification on what we do not understand. I have been hunting the same area for ten years and make it a point to call the DOW manager for that area yearly just to keep in contact and make sure I keep up on the new and ever changing rules. I have made mistakes in life so lets let this one go into the archives.

Ignorance is no excuse huh gwh? Tell you what, one of the most ignorant things I see here is somebody quick to jump on a guy for screwing up...a guy that is on your side and has busted his a$$ for you at that. Loyalty is a rare quality in a person anymore. Says alot about someone.
