Baiting

Great video as usual DU. Those "volunteers" just seem to be coming. Good to see u posting!

Dont know anything about laser detection Hunter55. Might need some additional info on what you're looking for might be helpful.

So I've had a couple coming into my AO the last few weeks. I noticed one was very large for these parts based on camera footage. Night before last my stealthcam went off at 8:15 and I made a 120 yard run of it to get into position and knocked the big guy down. 60 yard shot offhand but didnt hit the video button unfortunately. Shot took his right shoulder and leg pretty much off. He ran about 15 yards and I put another one through his chest. DRT. Biggest coyote I've ever seen and quite the specimen. For reference. my dog in the picture is 130 pounds of hound mixed with ridgeback.

I'm in the process of upgrading my night time hardware. Decided to go with a Tikka 308 bolt gun shooting 110gr BT's. Thermal is the Infiray Bolt T60C. Amazing optic. Sighted it in today for the first time and its awesomely accurate. My thinking is bumping up from the 223 to the 308 should be more better around here. The 223 AR with a Super Hogster has knocked down around 90 yotes over the last 13 years so no complaints but I'd prefer more DRT coyotes.

And so this season begins...

Coyote #2 showed up last night around 8:30 so another quick trip out and #2 was down. This time I took the new 308 for the job. Was a front-on offhand shot and it was instantly down. The RAV didnt work so no video unfortunately but it was DRT. There was a fist sized hole in the upper back area and it looked like the bullet entered and traversed upward taking out the spine maybe? The 110gr was devastating and impressive. I like it.

This morning it took the ride of shame to the bone pile

... and then joined coyote #1 from a couple of days ago...

The neighborhood is quite a bit safer now....until next time obviously. With these two, they had been elusive for about 6-8 weeks, occasionally stopping by the bait pile for a quick snack or to mark territory and then quickly move on. Then they'd disappear for a week or so and then come back. One night the trail cams caught them carrying a dead faun they killed. I can always tell when they're getting complacent and start staying longer at the bait pile and eating some dog food. The stealthcam worked out great this time - giving me a fairly instant photo that they were out there. Both these "hunts" lasted about 8 minutes from detection to the shot. Kinda feels like cheating but I'm ok with that.

Good to know Spur. My goal was/is major damage and shut down that's why I decided to bump up to the 308. 223/556 has served me well the last 12 years but I like to see them DRT. Time will tell...

I had very good results with the 110 Varmageddons in a 308 Savage Scout but the BAR shot the 125 gr. NBT's. better. Didn't try the 110s in the Garand (30-06), but it loved the 125 NBTs....all were 1:10 twist. As would be expected they put down coyotes, hogs w/authority. (I didn't save fur).

NOT to highjack the thread, nor do a thread drift. But with @Burnsome... 's post and the other remarks following his post got me to thinking.

Years ago I took in on trade-in, a Savage Axis (dated in 2015, per Savage) that "supposedly" couldn't get on paper and would not group according to the original owner. It is calibered in .308. Which I threw it in my personal safe to either sent back, or use the action for a different caliber build. Now, I'm curious with this rifle in the 110 - 125 gr .308 win loadings. Guess it's time to round up the bases/rings and pull down a boxed scope, and actually see how bad it is, or isn't.

Thank you for posting your results, awesome job on the coyotes. Looks like you have a winner. Looks like baiting is working for you lol.
Regards
Mike

Don't own a bore scope, but cleaned well yes it's been cleaned several times since being put in the safe. I've suspected that "IF" it truly is off, it's the scope bases screws that are what is off is my suspect. Which the Leupold /Redfied standard bases and maybe Burris rings can handle if they are drilled tapped off centered. Just never fired it to confirm what I was told. The barrel could be the issue, that will rear it's ugly head soon enough on target. Like I mentioned I was saving the action, but I also know a lot of folks will blame a rifle for their inabilities.
It's a coin toss, that is easy to fix.

Same here, the .308 and 110 Varmageddons have worked great for me. 90 gr. Varmageddons have been pure death from my 6.5 Grendel too.

I haven’t been on here for a while. Good to see some of you are having some success. Things have been very slow here this season. I killed one in August and one in September. Haven’t seen one in over three weeks now.

Greetings all. Good to see some getting some action early. Been a while since I've been on, just busy busy off season. Just got my first deer carcass out this morning to start the season. Almost immediately, eagles, crows and red tails. Oh well, same old operation. Looking forward to some coyote action. I'm still running the 22-250 this year with an Adder 640 V2, LRF with ballistic calculator. Let the games begin.

Good luck BP. Looking forward to the AARs

I upgraded to a Tikka 308 with an IRay T60c (or something like that cant remember at the moment). One kill with it so far so will run it this winter and see how it works out.
