Baiting

Mike, I can only hope that his name is MacArthur and that "he shall return." I will be glad to see him if he does. He didn't make the trip last night though.
 
I finally had another coyote show up at the bait pile early this morning. He was there for about 45 minutes. What I have never seen before was a feral cat standing his ground within feet of the coyote. I mean this went on for most of the 45 minutes and the cat never backed down or ran.

Congrats, Burn.

I had two coyotes at my site on July 4th, I guess to celebrate and taunt me. Just hope they stop by for a visit next month when I plan to resume hunting. This year I am looking forward to using a new rifle - a Howa mini action 20” heavy in 6mm ARC, and a new suppressor so hoping I can get enough action this season to see what both can do. I’m still working up handloads. I have been overrun with skunks this summer too.

Well, it was a Modest Beginning to the new season. I decided to check the bait pile before turning in and saw this big male coming up the edge of my yard. I'm surrounded by hundreds of acres of soybeans right now and until October, so seeing a coyote anywhere except my yard is next to impossible. I'm thinking this is probably the big male of the pair where I killed the female around the first week in June. He dropped his head just as I squeezed the trigger so his eyes didn't fair too well. Beans and corn pretty much have everything covered for miles, but I'll probably start back calling around the first of Sept. when some of the corn will be harvested and sundown will come earlier giving more time to get a stand in. It's pretty hot and humid right now in coastal NC. Here's the very short video.

 
WTG, Owen. That video is a good example of how a critter can get out of the way of a perfect shot. Wasn't that coyotes day, he sure made the wrong move. :ROFLMAO:
 
Thanks Clarence, and yes they can alter the shot in a split second. A figure he was a bonus all the way around given the present conditions here. I'll sure be glad to see the beans gone. Almost as glad as I will be for cooler nights and earlier sundowns. I'm looking forward to that first big Nor'easter where the temps drop and everything realizes summer is fading away.
 
Nice going. Sometimes they move just as the trigger is being squeezed. I had one that suddenly turned as the trigger was in motion. Snibbed him. Would have been a dead coyote if he were two seconds slower. Looks like the Mars MT 1000 is still performing well for you.

Trespass fee for the back yard rivals eating at the diner in the field. Sheeeesh!
 
Well, early this morning I scored three firsts: (1) first for the upcoming 2026-27 season, a young male at 80 yards. He was unusually colored with almost a rust and black color. Distance was 80 yards. (2) He is also the first with my new 6mm ARC Howa Mini bolt action, 20" heavy shooting a 70 gr. Sierra Blitz King. Last 5 shots averaged 2967 fps. I have been consistently shooting 1/2" groups at 80 yards with the load. (3) And, another first coyote suppressed with a new Dead Air Nomad LTi XC. He was quartering to me, a shoulder shot and if not for a couple of small drops of blood, it would have been difficult to see the impact.. The Blitz King did not exit and continues to impress.



View on the way to the shack yesterday evening. Just at dark it came one heck of a storm with thunder, lightening and hard rain, but it only lasted a few minutes. The rest of the night was totally quiet until the alarm sounded early this morning. I squeezed the trigger at 0525. DRT with hardly a twitch.
