banded doves

I got a banded dove earlier this year and was wondering if any of you guys have gotten a banded one. Is this pretty common? Never got or heard of them banding doves 'til now.

Pigeons Not really doves. There feral here and we can shoot them all year, no season or limits. Introduced like the pigeons and are a pest.

I killed one in NM in 2011. Have some friends in South Carolina that see a few killed every year. Not very common anywhere that I know of. Pretty cool though.

Several species of doves are regularly exhibited at pigeon show through out the USA. They are banded with seamless bands with the year and number on them.
These birds from time to time do get loose into the wild one way or the other.
The ringneck doves are the most common, and some places are considered a sporting bird that is said to be very tasty properly prepared.
Years ago I used to go to pigeon shows and that is how I know so much about them.
I hope this info helps.

This band wasn't like that. Just like a tiny duck band. I'll try to find it and get a pic up. This was a mourning dove. turned band number in. was banded last spring as a youngin in Erie, bout two hours north of here. Wrap them babies in bacon cook on grill and slather with sweet baby ray's, very yummy! Jase Robertson is right, the filet mignon(sp) of the sky. Cooked 20 of em up and my kids couldn't get enough.

Yeah, it's really neat. I was very surprised to see it. Would be cool to have a lanyard full of em. bet that'd take a few lifetimes though. Still haven't killed enough waterfowl to get one from them, hope to change that this year. Took me a while to find it, was "lost" on a shelf in my safe, was getting worried I did lost it. Need to put it somewhere safe.

My dad and I helped the New Mexico Dept of Game and Fish band dove here in New Mexico. Over a couple of years we banded around 500 birds. There is a different band for white=winged and mourning dove. Be sure and call the number on the band to help the study of the birds.

It was a lot of fun for me as a high school student. I am now a sophomore in college majoring in wildlife science. I learned how to age and sex the birds. I also learned how to follow protocol for a research project.

We have been banding mourning and white winged doves in Texas for the past 5 or 6 years at least. I have banded a couple hundred the last 4 years.

Funnel traps.

Remember that you have to have a federal bird banding permit to trap and/or band migratory birds.
