Barnes bullets good or bad

Northest coyote

I was thinking of using barnes 60 grn. tsx in a ar-15 in 223 for coyote. Anyone use them or have any loads. I'm using a rra ath upper with a 18" heavy weight barrel in a 1-8 twist.

I've killed a few with 62's they work well. If you want more speed you could drop down to the Barnes in the 50ish sizes. They work well from what,I've read.

60gr Vmax is a good bullet too.

In all my big game hunting rifles i have changed to the Barnes . They are accurate and lethal with high BCs. Have not tried them with the 22-250 ackley cuz the gun just loves 40 and 50 grain Nosler B-tips. Just my 2 cents

Barnes are great bullets. I have been loading them since they were painted blue.
I load them in:
223rem (Blue)"I do not use them in 5.56mm"
220 swift (Blue)
243win (Solid)
7mm rem mag (Blue)
338win (Blue)
38-55win (Jacketed soft point)

Barnes Bullets have to be heat treated to be able to have "controlled expansion" properties. So if you want "proper" bullet operation, they have a MUCH higher velocity requirement than any other type of bullet.
Whether or not that poses a problem for you, depends upon your range and starting velocity.

I was thinking about trying the TSX myself.Do those grooves really reduce the fowling issue much compared to the original design?I read that was a problem.

Yes, they reduce fouling to a minimum, but they are also supposed to reduce pressures by quite a bit.

To the OP, I use Barnes exclusively for big game, and have since about 1992. They work great. For your application, I would suggest trying the 45gr TSX. It is more than enough for coyotes. I use the 45gr XLC (blue) bullets in my 22 Hornet for coyotes. It seems to 'up' the performance level of the Hornet to a 223 on game.

My experience with them in a 22-250 was that I couldn't get the accuracy I was looking for in them. But that was quite a while ago and perhaps things have improved.

the 120 gr TTSX is my 7-08's favorite bullet and it doesn't copper foul any where near as much as the 140 gr. Sierra Pro Hunters I sometimes piddle around with, looking for a lesser expensive bullet for practice.

Well, don't be shy, tell us how you really feel about them, lol.

Lol well he asked!

I went through few of there xlc bullets in 2506 and three different 300 mags.

I was very unimpressed with accuracy and terminal performance on deer.

I used the 100g and loaded the 165s for few friends.

After 1 deer season all of us were not impressed and went back to NBTS.

My 2506 left the biggest exit in the buck I kiled to date, pie plate exit after smashing through both shoulders on a little buck at 150-200 yards. I've shot a lot of deer with nbts and never came across a 8" exit...

The 300s acted the opposite way penciling through and shedding the petals. I know this for fact because the 2 bullets I found in the offside of the deer lost the petals.

For the price and performance that's why I say I won't and don't use or recommend them anymore.

They may have fixed some of there problems with the newer triple shock but they just left a bad taste in my mouth after seeing them in action for myself.

There's no excuse or reason why a 165 x bullet shouldn't completely penetrate broadside or quartering away deer. It should go lengthwise if ya ask me and how everyone else says they perform. Oh you can eat right up to the hole they say.....yah right, maybe ones with the 300 you could have but I tossed the whole front half out of the buck I shot with my 2506.

Just few experiences but they were enough for us to not use them anymore.

The 62gr TSX is a excellent bullet for me simply because we have just as good a chance of running up on hogs as we do predators. If I were choosing a bullet solely for predators/varmints I wouldn't pay the premium for Barnes. It's just not needed. Be honest with yourself, coyotes aren't Armor plated. And as it was already said if you don't chase velocity Barnes probably aren't for you, they need to be pushed @ or very close to max to preform as intended.

+1 but i will say that i didnt give that much effort, 2 different charge wt, same powder, same length.....horrible groups....its hard to make a any.223 shoot bad IMO....
