Barnes Varmint Grenade Test

K_Hini, I think you're on the right track here. If you got them down to .56" then you might be able to do a touch more work on powder charge and / or seating depth to get that group down to .50 or better. And you are correct - it is the length of bullet, not the weight that matters in regards to rate of twist. I have an uncle that wonders why I feel the 55 Gr Nosler Ballistic Tip shoots better out of my rifle than a 55 Gr Hornady SPSX = it's the length of the bullet stabilizing better in my 1:9.25" twist that makes the difference.

for some reason these bullets hit the lands in my gun at 2.225"!! so I have the oal length at 2.200" that doesn't leave a whole lot of room for adjustment. This is only the 2nd load I have ever worked up so maybe once I finish testing these loads I will try a few more powder charges .1gr up and down from my best groups. maybe try different powders we will see.. see what happens if nothing I will be happy with that group!!

happy hunting

It seems to me that most all of Barnes bullets have a profile like a match bullet. They usually shoot better in a faster twist than most of the standard twists rifles normally used. I have not used any of these as see no need to work up something new when already have great loads for rifles now. Getting too expensive to play around anymore.

I have a load for my 22-250, 38.0 grains of varget, winchester cases, winchester wlr primers, 36.0 varmint grenade. These crono at 4200 and you can cover five with a dime at 100 yards. they are not the most accurate bullets in my gun but they sure do a job on pdogs.

You might could just use a diff.
primer without changing load.

I shot the 40 Varminators in my .223 till they became unavailable. Good price, and at 3800 they were a one holer with both my dog guns. Under a half inch all the time.

I will now change to Vmax, and I'm PO'd at Barnes.
