Barrel Comparison?

Where would you guys rate ER Shaw Barrel with some of the other better AR barrels. Would you say they are almost as good as Shilen?

I was just looking at the Model 1 sale uppers in .204 and they have one for $435 with a 24" Shaw barrel.

Im sure alot of people are going to disagree with me but I would put them right up there with the high dollar barrels. Most of the precision barrel makers. The only thing I have ever heard bad with them is they do not airguage so they ship a substandard barrel once in a while but they are good to take care of it. I hear alot of talk of how much more accurate lilja and shilen are but I dont measure my groups in thousandths amd I dont think I could shoot a quarter inch group if the rifle was capable of it. I use wilson and er shaw quite a bit and actually like the wilsons a little better just because they seem to be easier to clean. I also think it would surprise you if we could really find out what rifle manufacturers use er shaw barrels on their out of the box rifles.

That will be an interesting read. I was wondering the same thing.

Got a new M4 in & set it up for coyotes. Topped it off with a Leupold 3-9x40 & it'll do 2-2 1/2 inches at 100.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Was looking on Model1 today & found the 16" freefloated varmint upper at $360 with the Shaw bbl. I suppose some decent testimony will help, from people that have shot Shaw barrels.

The kind of accuracy I got from the standard M4 bbl. is unacceptable, so, I'll switch. Can't hurt... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have never had an ER barrel in an AR platform, but I do own several on bolt guns and several for the universal receiver. I have never had problems with them. They are pretty rough when they are new. I have almost always found them to need a good lapping. They do tend to "run-out" a bit with the longer barrels. Would I trust one in competition...No. Do I hunt with them...Sure.

I'm looking for 1" on my DMPS AR platform.

If it'll do that at 100 yards for $360, minus what I can sell the M4 upper for, then I'll be a happy camper. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

It's just a pickup rifle, as my go-to calling rifle is a custom match AR.

Ridge Runner is one of those super talented long range shooters if the barrel was really that inaccurate Im sure he would have chopped it up and use it for tent stakes.

I have shilen, kreiger, lilja, lothar walther,ER shar, and a hart on the way, the shaw is the least accurate of the bunch.

But what is least accurate mean? 1" at best at 100 yards or are they a 1" or better gun if I were do do my part?

I ordered the Mod.1 204 upper yesterday. After finally shooting an upper I put together with a 24" DPMS 204 barrel.
The DPMS barrel did very well with the 30gr. Bergers and RL-10, not to bad with 32 VMax either. I think it earned a starting spot in this years Chuck busting rifle line up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Although it's pretty heavy I'll just have to grit my teeth and tote it around /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I looked and searched for another DPMS barrel and they seem to be back ordered everwhere so I went ahead and ordered the Mod.1 204 upper. I did some Google searches and could'nt find any reviews on the Mod.1 204 upper. I'll be very pleased if it can hang with the DPMS barreled rig.

I prep'd 200 pieces of WW brass late last night and have 300 more, 30gr. Bergers coming this week along with some Benchmark powder to try. I did order 100 of the Barnes 20 cal. 26 gr. VG's just to try.

I might use an ER Shaw barrel if I was to build a 50-100 yard max, rifle, and they paid me. I had them install one on an action for me, chambered in 270. You could hit an elk with it at. It would hold honest groups around 2" at 100 yards with reloads. I had the hardest time getting the copper out of it. I got rid of that rifle because it just plain should have shot better with the money I paid them. I ended up hating that rifle. I had a $39.99 Turkish Mauser that out shot it.

I'd rather buy a factory rifle, instead of dealing with them again. Maybe they are better now, maybe I'll win the lottery, or date Jessica Simpson too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What he said...

They are the bottom of the barrel (HA!, I made a pun).

its never shot a group an inch or less, my wilson barreled RRA shoots way better, as does my SUM barreled 25 wssm. Its not horrible but doesn't give me the warm fuzzy feeling, heck it won't run with a LW barreled mini-14 thats in the safe.

I have only had experience with two ER Shaw barrels. One was a .257 Roberts owned by a friend and the other is a .243 Win, I own. The Roberts wouldn't do better than 3" at 100 yards before firelapping. It felt like it had two tight spots in it before firelapping.

The .243 Win. is OK for a deer rifle, about 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards, but for the price of a barrel and installation ..... I would buy something else, even at a higher cost, and have less of a chance of getting a bad one.

CW, due to good reports I'm trying a Hart this time around, liljas are great, kreiger are to but slower than lilja's, harts are reported to be accurate and pretty fast as are the broughton 5C's.
From all I've read, the best cheap barrels are the OLY SUM and Pac Nor. WOA uses pac nors, as does john noveske, Dtech uses SUM barrels when available, and gives you quite a bargain for your dollar, considering he sells custom built uppers for a lil more than a production unit.
The smith who built my long range hunting rifle claims you won't go wrong with kreiger, lilja, broughton or rock creek.
