Barrel Comparison?

RR,
Thanks for the info. I have a Dtech already and it is worth every penny in accuracy. It has been by far the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I have heard Pac Nors are awesome also.

But I think the kreigers and liljas are a bit much for my pocket book but it sounds like I will settle for the SUMS and the Pac Nors. Thanks for all the info.

My Model 1 upper came with a ER Shaw barrel. I ordered it with the 1-14" twist so I could make most use out of 40- 55 grain bullets. And it sure does shoot. I have shot a whole magazine (20 shots) into less than an inch with both the 50 grain Vmax and 50 grain Nosler BT. It really did suprise me how well it shoots. I bought this one after seeing how well a friend's shot. He was taking prairie dogs on the other side of 500 yards with his. I was there watching him. Another guy on this forum, 204Dude, was spotting for him. He can verify this to be true.

I have heard that the Shaw barrels can be excellent shooters or so-so shooters. I think that Billy and I got excellent shooters. Maybe we were just lucky.

Oh, and I have a custom bolt gun with a Krieger barrel on it. It shoots better than the Shaw barrel, but at more than twice the price, it ought to.

Comparing an ER Shaw barrel to a Lilja, Krieger, etc. custom barrel is a bit of a stretch.

As someone mentioned, they make a good/decent grade factory rifle barrel, but they are not typically comparable in any way (accuracy or ease of cleaning) to a good custom barrel.

CWeeks, you should check the price of a Pac Nor and Lothar Walthar.

A huge factor is what is your intended use for the gun and how much accuracy do you need?

I have had a lot of custom guns and have put less than top drawer barrlels on some rifles to compare them.

With the cost of shipping and chambering a barrel, I will save my money a little longer and get excellent quality barrels from now on.

You can't believe how dumb it makes you feel when you have gone to all the trouble to have a barrel put on a rifle just to see the project go sour.

Having said this, I had a good friend that I shot with at the range constantly that used Shaw barrels. His barrel shot 1" while mine shot .300 or less. Question is just how much accuracy do you need to make you feel satisfied about your project?

The custom AR's with top notch match barrels will shoot .400 or less with high end optics with taylored loads for that gun. The joy in shooting a gun of this quality will turn a bad day into a good day everytime...what is that worth to you?

Skimping on barrels or glass /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif leads to heartburn, high blood pressure, headache & anxiety. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Some drugs required to treat these symptoms share the side effect of erectile dysfunction. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Great points thanks for the post. For me I will never be shooting matches, shoots..... I want a .75-1" rifle is all. For now I have a Dtech that has shot several 5 shot groups at .5 and love it. My rifles are used for practical hunting rifles. This one will be for 350 or less shots on rockchucks and yotes. So 1" is great for me at 100 yards.

Knockem,
I would have do disagree with you...UNLESS you are looking for a match rifle. I have a Stevens with an $80 scope on it(cause that is all I could afford at the time) and I have shot some amazing groups with it. And hutning situations I have shot some chucks at 300+ yards with that same combo. I thought I would change the scope out when I could afford it and it has been so accurate that I have not wanted to change it.

None of my rifles have expensive scopes on them and I have been real happy with them. But one will be upgraded at some point cause it fogs up if it is cold outside but the rest have never let me down.

I hit the middle of the road on scopes...

I don't really want an $800-1000 scope. (Well, I'd LIKE one, I'm just not going to spend that on one..) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have all Leupolds on all my rifles. They sight in well, are reliable, & hold zero well.

For about $200 I have peace of mind, & a clear, good quality scope with a lifetime warranty. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

well last I checked J&T will sell you a complete upper, less barrel, so all you'd hafta due is order a headspaced barrel from pac-nor, woa, or Oly/dtech. 20 min later you'd have a functioning accurate upper.

RR, I will look into it and see what price range we are looking at. Knowing what you know which one of the 3 barrel would you buy?
