Barrel life on a 243 WSSM

I am getting a AR in 243 WSSM. I was wondering what sort of barrel life can I get out of this before my groups start getting larger. Any tidbits of info would be a big help.

The bullet weight, barrel material, and the method of rifling will all have an effect on barrel life.

If you shoot 55 grain bullets, you will enjoy a very short barrel life. If you shoot 100 grain bullets, your barrel life will probably be longer by a factor of about 10 times.

I have several hundred of the .243 uppers in the field, spread out over about 3 years and have yet to have my first barrel come back being "shot out"

I'm thinking I've heard that some of the bolt action 243 wssm have a chrome lined barrel. I have a Olympic upper in 243 wssm and it's not chrome lined. I have only shot 200 or 300 rounds through it so far so I dont know about the barrell life. Like Dtech said the lighter bullet you use the faster the barrell will be shot out.

Dtech do you sell 243 wssm magazines? If so I would be interested in 1 or 2.

The wssm are not Chrome-lined ???

Nope. Never have been. Originally, until all the testing could be satisfied in the 416 stainless steel with regards to pressure, they were button rifled from 4140 Chromemoly steel. Now, they are all standard with the broach-cut 416 SS Ultra-Match barrels from the factory.

Bore/throat life has never been an issue with these rifles, and they have been out for 5 years or so now. At the factory, we have not replaced a single barrel due to bore/throat errosion yet.

I [est] I have close to 400rd's shot through my 24" Olympic .243WSSM AR upper. I use only Factory 95gr Win SBT's. Still shoots mighty fine. Best long range coyote thumper I've ever owned /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif.

I purchased mine used a few years ago and have shot the snot out of it, it still shoots very well.

Hey Gary,
What sort of loads are you using in the 243WSSM. With all the coyotes and rockchucks around your place that would be a fun caliber on the AR-15 Platform. I'm seriously considering another upper in that caliber or going for the DPMS AR-10 type in 243 Win. I saw one of the DPMS at a gun show two weeks ago and I was intrigued.

i've shot around 400 rounds through mine so far, and that's with a mild load. i haven't seen any sign to them getting bigger. i'm still getting MOA or better with five shots on a consistant basis.

i've heard alot of bashing when it comes to this cartridge, but i stand by it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Morning Jim,

I like to use the 75-85 grain bullets from Hornady they tend to be very accurate out to 400 yards. This past deer season the 100g Remington Cor-lokt bullets put down 2 nice Mulie bucks and 1 Whitetail Buck. But I prefer the Nosler 95g Ballistic Tips for deer as they are more accurate.

As far as the DPMS, you probably know I already have two of the 308 models. The one I really like is the AP-4 16" carbine simply because it's somewhat lighter than the LR-308 with that massive 24" bull barrel. I have arthritis in my back and carrying anything heavy for too long of a period is very discomforting to me and the DPMS AP-4 carbine is balanced better than my WSSM. The WSSM has a bull barrel and the weight is up front, where as the AP-4 weight is more centralized around the recievers.

Using the 110 to 125 grain bullets in the AP-4 makes it a hard hitter on coyotes but the 243W version is a great choice.
I would love to have one like this one >> http://www.rrarms.com/catalog.php?prod=GRFLR-243L

smaller bullets are typically running through the barrel alot faster than a big heavy bullet. Typically the faster the bullet the shorter the barrel life. Thats why my .308 with chrome lined barrel will last 10,000 rounds
