Really!? Benchrest huh? So the last time you "checked"..... sighters and 5 shots for group, how many rounds fired in 10minutes? How hot do you suppose those barrels get? And how long between groups? "Spend more time learning how to set up your rifle and learn to shoot better..." isn't gonna' keep the barrel any cooler.

Maybe if I shoot slower bullets it won't heat my barrel so quickly. Oh ya, and practice more.

Lots of benchresters wait till the wind is exactly the same as their sighting shots, then fire 5 or 10 shots rapid fire to take advantage of wind conditions. Very few shoot 1 shot every 2 minutes.

Dang, wish I'd thought of that; just think of all the time I'da saved over all these years waiting for barrels to cool!

Edit to add: HP XTC competitors routinely shoot rapid fire strings consisting of 10 shots in 60 seconds so rifles must hold POI from cool to hot, especially when shooting regional matches where two rapid strings are shot back to back w/a reasonably short "scoring" time between strings.

The gentleman I was referring to was talking about having flyers after the second shot multiple times. A properly set up rifle should be able to shoot at least a 3 shot group without having issues due to barrel heating, if it can't there are problems with the stock, bedding of the stock or any one or a combinations of other things. As far as bench rest shooting and barrel heat, I've shot many 15 to 20 shot strings during 90 degree plus heat in under 7 minutes and never had a problem with flyers due to barrel heating and yes the barrels do get hot. I was just trying to point out that the problem he is having is most likely due to something else and letting the barrel cool down between shots in order to keep the group together(and it wasn't) is telling you there is another problem.

pyscodog--I bought the BarrelCool setup and used it on the PD hunt I was out on June 10, 2016. It was a bit under 90º at the time and after a string of 5 or 6 shots, my temperature sensitive strip on my barrel indicated the barrel was 123º so I removed the bolt from the rifle, inserted the BarrelCool into my chamber and turned on the fan. I timed it for 6 minutes and the temperature strip showed that the barrel was down to 114º. As for the claim "it will cool a barrel down in 5 minutes" that would depend on the outside temperature, the diameter of the bore, and just how hot the barrel was before you started using the BarrelCool, but it definitely took my barrel temp down 9º in 6 minutes.

I carry the device in my backpack and feel it will be money well spent. I, too, question how long the batteries will last, but I guess I'll find out this coming Tuesday. I'm heading out for a little prairie dog shooting that day. I do have three extra batteries with me for backup

The device Ackleyman uses wouldn't be of much value to me because I don't shoot PDs from a bench. I walk, shoot, walk some more, shoot some more, etc. It would be difficult to utilize Ackleyman's setup. However, when I work up loads at the range, Ackleyman's setup would do just fine.

caldwell makes one that has a 12v internal Lithium Ion rechargeable battery

supposedly 3-4 hours of runtime

its designed to fit into an AR magwell.

I purchased one of these from Amazon, and it works fantastically. After a round of shooting you simply remove your magazine and this unit snaps into place. Switch it on and it blows a forceful stream of cool air through your barrel and gas tube. This works better than anything else I've tried. And here in Arizona while shooting AR's in the Summer, your barrel can really get hot. Fully charged it has a run time of over 2 hours. It's the best unit available for barrel cooling. I never go to the range without it.
