so what reloader is best?

haha, just kidding.

someone just gave me a mec 650 reloader and a mec case conditioner. it came with a lyman shotshell handbook, first edition from 1969! i do plan on buying an updated book, by the way. i read a lot of old posts that mention testing various loads through trial and error. i also read that it may not be safe to load for other people, unless you are aware of how your load shoots in their gun(s). so my question is this: how would you load for 3 people (family and friends) and make sure your shotshells will shoot safely in their guns? i would like to load for waterfowl, for myself and 3 others. i was hoping to save a little money by reloading, but i also read some posts that say the OPPOSITE is true (i could be spending MORE money by reloading!) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Working up shotshell loads can be similar to rifle from the stand point of different guns will pattern loads differently based on hull, powder, charge and wad. I find the differences to generally be much less dramatic that rifles however.

Resizing is really a must for autos and pumps and for loading for different guns unless you can keep the hulls separate. I think pushing the powder charge limits is much more difficult than for rifles since there is less indication of pressure. Steel shot is much less forgiving because the shot will not absorb any of the pressure. It is all transferred to the barrel. Also, Alliant Steel powder and some others do not meter well. I weigh all powder and shot charges. My preference is for the steelmaster for waterfowl and a Ponsness-Warren for lead.

RSI (Reloading Specialties Inc. in Minnesota) is a good source of components and data. I have used one or two of their most popular loads with great results on ducks and pheasant. Depending on the year it can save money. If I can find Kent Fasteel cheap then I buy. Until recently Kent was the only company making steel loads that had the velocity of handloads. With steel the speed is essential.

In the long run if you load enough for 4 people there could be some savings.

so do i start with a certain formula, then pattern each gun? and with shotshells, is there an indication that i've reached a good formula? is a chronograph necessary?

I'll also add that for a family viewed forum this type of material should not be allowed. Freedom of speech..yes, but take it where someone else appreciates it. A hunting foum is not the place.

I was born in Twin Falls, Idaho. I must say I am feeling a little ashamed at how my old town is being represented. Merry CHRISTmas KingEvil. My eight year old son just walked by when I was typing this and now I am explaining your avatar. Thanks. I'm done.

If you are planning on loading in quantity I'd make sure the guys you're loading for buy all the components because unless you have a high end progressive loader you'll be spendin some time.
Find the Hodgdon loading manual for 2007 the back half of the book is dedicated to shotgun loading with formulas for nearly everything. My suggestion would be to determine what you plan to use the shells for, find appropriate components and give it a whirl. In some cases "whats available" will determine what you use.

"we" I don't see anyone here supporting your cause except you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif BTW, my son was looking over my shoulder while I was scrolling through and then typing. This may not be a religious forum but I think you will find you are among Christians.

i've noticed that on a couple other threads. in this case, it was a result of a couple uneducated, ignorant posters.
