bb gun for predators???

Uhh..me thinks he is.

Catcher, no it isn't. Plain and simple...no. Will it kill one, sure. It'll kill a human if shot placement is good enough, but reliably no. We don't hunt critters that large with pellet guns.

CoyoteCatcher, when I read your post I think you are serious so I'm going to answer seriously, OK? You must be young?

I won't say you CAN'T kill one, but it's very unlikely. Don't try it. I don't think an air rifle is even legal here in Arizona for either animal, and Arizona is pretty lienient.

A .22 LR would be the absolute minimum for a fox, and I would want a .22 mag for bobcat as a minimum.

Hope this helps.

i finally got my father to let me go in the woods behind our house with the 410 shotgun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif as long as i stay in the 2 mile range . how close would i have to get a coyote, fox, bobcat or something like that to me before i can kill it with the 410 shotgun.

CoyoteC,

As a young boy I hunted fox with a 410 with #2 shot. You have to be within 30 yards and thats streching it to the max. 25 yards is better.

I'm sure that you can kill any predator, from fox to bobcat and coyotes within the guns limitations and yours. Good luck bud.

Well I did once bag a porcupine with a pellet gun. Does that count? I will say it was not an appropriate weapon, but it was all I had at that young age. I will also submit that a pellet gun is on the weak side for coons as well.

thinks i went out looking behind our house today and found a creek beside a field with just a little bit of water running through it and i found some raccoon tracks. the front feet were 2 feet apart!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When I was your age Coyotecatcher we used to hunt animals with out BB guns everynight! The answer to your question depends on the type of BB gun that you own. My brothers and I have taken several Coons, rabbits, foxes, and other small game of the sort with ours. My brothers BB gun was a rather powerful one however. Comparable to a .22 caliber rifle. Mine was just the original 10 pump air rifle, and it did do the job a number of times on the smaller game such as squirrel, coons, and some p-dogs.
Remember that you need to think of the animal first. If you don't think that you can place that shot in a very vital area, let the little critter live. We past up several little animals due to a bad shot. If you are going to attempt to hunt with your bb gun, be a responsible hunter, and be considerate to the animal.
Looking back, if I had the option to hunt with a 410 shotgun vs. my BB gun for fox, and Coon I would take the 410....
Good hunting to ya!

Well a bb gun or .177 pellet gun IS a .17 caliber ain't it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A raccoon with front feet that were two feet apart? Hmm, how far between those two feet? I figure ten or twelve inches for a big raccoon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif A really BIG raccoon I mean. LOL

Glad to see your getting out with dad's permission. Try calling them. They might come in closer. I put a scope on my 12 gauge. Looking to through a slug or two at a coyote with it. Good luck.

BB's and pellets are .177
.17Rem is .172
So I guess you are better armed with a Daisy than a Remmy 700.

coyotecatcher,

Hey, I guess you were serious. I just wanted to post an apology. I have posted in here before that I like this bulletin board because I feel comfortable asking questions. I feel like I may have taken away some of that level of comfort for you and I want to apologize for that.

Hope to hear from you again,

Dunc

Depends on the bb gun. RWS is making one in a 9mm (60 grain pellet at 900+fps.) lever action now. There are several adult air rifles that shoot 1200+ feet per second. My brothers .22 caliber RWS Career 707 ($500) will shoot through a 1x4 pine board, and groups under 2 1/2" at a hundred yards. Plenty enough for most fox at close range.
